Were you an aerobics instructor or mobile hairdresser at the time ??

Nope was head of the training squad at McDonalds lol

By that I mean, regular worker paid about 20p more an hour to train newbies

Ha, fun period of my life. I've had an example of all the XR/RS models ending up with 4 different Cossies before moving on to BMW as I got older and richer. 400hp RWD Saph was my favourite, least favourite was the first version Escort Cosworth, way too laggy.

A car worth £12k now I don't think would have been worth keeping. You would have had to have spent money on it keeping it running, possibly insuring it and all the other running costs. A car you don't really want will cost you each year and I doubt after 20/30 years you would make any money at all.

If the car was worth £62k now, different story.

I remember my old G reg XR3i. Having gone to that from a 16V Astra GTE, to suddenly having no power steering again was a nightmare turning that thing around - even though it wasn't that heavy. Clutch was a genuine Ford one and was quite light actually.

I remember a friend at the time buying a Series I RS Turbo. I think it got nicked.

I preferred the late Series II but then I never liked MK3 Escorts even though it is one of the most iconic Escort shapes with those rear tail lights in my mind (and I remember MK1 and MK2 Escorts very well as there were plenty of them around in the 80s).
