Before I brought my C240 it had the Crank pulley changed, unfortunately the oil seal is now leaking, I assume its straight forward to replace the seal, on other cars I have had I have made a tool to enable the seal to be pushed in using the crankbolt, in order to do this I need to know the...
I was working under the car this morning today sorting out a temp repair on the exhaust heat shield and decided to change the steering damper while I have the car up on stands. This W202 have just done 80,000 miles with the steering damper being changed for the first time. Interesting to note...
The part alone will cost £270 inc VAT. STAR diagnostics apparently tells that the fault is not an electrical one (broken or shorted contact) and the only course of action is a new/refurbished valve.
Does anyone have knowledge of repairing or sourcing the damper valve?
It's for a 2001...
I know this has been done a number of times before but it's worth another reminder.
If anyone with a W202 hasn't changed the steering damper recently (say in the last 50k miles or so) then do so (or at least check it out).
I replaced mine yesterday as it was leaking and had gone all soft...
While under the old hack the other day I noticed that the steering damper was decidedly oily and "past it" looking. Steering has always been a touch vague, with a tendency to jump to one side when it hit a dip in the road on that side.
10 minutes work with 2 x 17mm spanners, and £20 - it is...
Hi,
I have seen many threads talking about changing the steering damper.
What are the common symptoms that would suggest a worn steering damper and is this something that needs to be done once the car has done a certain amount of mileage ?
Where is this damper / is it difficult to...
It's dawned on me over the past couple of months that the ride on my 260E isn't as smooth as I'd expect it to be for an executive car with this much sprung weight.
I generally notice it when going over manhole covers, those metal strips on the motorway or poor road surface. It's a bit hard to...
A couple of questions,
Is it a good price ?
How difficult is it to fit ?

As per title, just had my 202 serviced and the $tealer noted it had a worn steering damper. Firstly, Merc were under the impression that this may cause a problem with the MOT which is due in 3 weeks, I assume this is correct? Having had a look under the car last night it looks like it is...
I'm selling my W124 shortly and I have a brand-new unused steering damper to give away.
Steering damper can be used with other models:
STABILUS No. Part No. Stock Manufacturer Type
A 208 ( CLK Cabrio)
R 129 (SL)
R 170 (SLK)
S 202 (C-Klasse, Kombi)
W 124 (E-Klasse)
W 201
W 202...
For your reference....
When you start to get patterns like this on your drive way you know you have a leak!
Conclusion is a leaking steering damper - shown here (without leak).
Part is about £32 + VAT ish, so not expensive but apparently common to fail.
