£1800 for b service!

My point is that some fastidious owners may be obsessed with FSH but the dealers do not seem to be and neither can the used buyers be or they would struggle to find a car to buy.

I have bought cars with no service history in the past. I buy on condition, and it's easy to see if the car was well looked after.

One car I bought with no history was immaculate, had 4 newish identical premium tyres, clean engine oil, and new front discs and pads - for example.

I have also bought a car with only one key fob.

The point is that these were advertised as such and it was reflected in the price.

My issue is with a car that is incorrectly advertised as having FSH, because I know that when I try to sell it, the buyer will want to pay me accordingly.

In short, FSH isn't a deal breaker for me, but I don't want to pay for something that I am not getting.

You could say that I am fastidious about cars being correctly described and correctly priced.

Good post....sounds much like me. My car also has one key. Will have to talk to PCS about another. Mind you I said that about my ALFA....5 years later I sold it....still with the one key!!!

Hubby is considering looking after both our cars. He can do all the servicing, bar gearbox oil changes. If it has a fault then throw it into a specialist with all the gizmos. Keeping all the receipts for when the time comes to change. He used to do all our cars over the years but rolling around on the driveway as the years have gone on isn't appealing. But he has mentioned it a couple of times now, so perhaps the rekindled interest has sparked again.

As mentioned above he spent a small fortune on his Range Rover in maintenance but when the time came to change I doubt it affected the value again lesser maintained RR. Although in 7 years it only let us down once.

Dare I ask for a link to a dealer that sells on Ebay.......

The older the car, the less effect the service history will have on resale value.

A bunch of invoices on a 3 years old car will be frowned upon, but on a 7 years old car it's absolutely fine.

Re eBay, there are a few, see for example:

update, got a 3 service+MOT contract. Costs £66 a month for 36 months = £2376 in total
B service done at Southend. This was the y6 B service (6th service from new), All covered in the service contract but the following was done
  1. B service
  2. Brake fluid
  3. Transmission oil change
  4. Air filter
  5. Spark plugs
  6. Sunroof lubrication
  7. MOT
The cost to me would have been just shy of £1500 (other dealers nearby were quoting £1800.

Overall it looks like the service package was worth it as I still have an A and a B left

If the right services fall due then it can be very cost effective. The service you’ve just had was a big one!

I'm wondering what I'll get for the glc in years 6,7,8 .

I won't have done 77,500 miles , it won't be 10 years old , so that's the gearbox counted out , will it be oil n filter and a brake fluid change . ,?? Wondering if I should even bother as it's nothing I can't do myself .

By the sound of it, most items on your C63 are on a 3-year cycle? How long are planning on keeping the car?

I've been committed to DIY servicing so far and I've been in no doubt that from a financial perspective it's reduced the long term cost of running a car by £000's. We tend to think that a FMBSH is essential to a cars value but the increasingly high cost of main dealer servicing must be reducing the number of those cars out there. Perhaps MB is an exception but you cannot assume that an approved used car has a full main dealer service history. My recent experience of VW main dealers is that it's exactly the opposite with a full history being very much the exception and some approved cars are being sold with no history at all other than the service just before it's sale.

If you are committed to main dealer servicing then the way costs have been rising at a rate way above inflation means that a service plan will be like money in the bank because in 3 years time it will be even more expensive.

....We tend to think that a FMBSH is essential to a cars value....

The OP has a 2018 C63s. In these circumstances, the statement above is true.

For lesser and/or older cars, the situation may be different, of course.

It's a 2019 C63s. Purchased by me in 2022. It's got 38k on it now. In terms of how long I plan on keeping it.....with ICE going out in say 5y I was honestly thinking of keeping it as a long termer. `indefinitely. There is nothing like it for me. I love the roar and brutality of it. It's incredibly frugal given what it's capable of. I know folk look down on the facelift W205 but for me a car without apple car play is a no go.

It is going to need 4 discs and pads this year....£2.5k at main dealer and 1.8k at independent

That's just madness for discs and pads.. I bet that if you DIYed it and looked around for quality after market parts you could do it for a fraction of that.

just the genuine parts are like well over 1k

True...but as said there are other suppliers of quality brake parts.
And don't forget, Mercedes don't make pads or discs, they use third party suppliers. So apart from being in a Merc box what is a Geniune part? At the end of the day a Mercedes brake disc braking surface is just a spinning lump of cast iron....just like most other cars.

£750 each brembo discs at ecp.

A good service history on a used car up to a certain age is essential in my view especially if it is a relatively complex car EG, AMG, RS Audi's - Ataon Martins and other similar cars. However, when cars like the aforementioned lack a history or history is lost, often, fewer people would be interested and often get less money

A good way to see is a used car has been looked after is if it contains th emain dealer/indy service history ito establish if services were on time - also look around the car inside and outside gives an indication - another good indicator is the quality/brand of tyres and how these tyres look along with the wheels.

My car, I was the first owner - the outside is rarely washed as it hurts me to see the vandal damage etc - but the inside is like new - the tyres are not the most expensive but ok and what I was looking for, excellent grip in the wet, ie Rainsport tyres that I've also used on my smaller mercs/c classes in the past. I found the original tyres a bit to hard on the current car/gle - Dunlops maxx sport IIRC
