11k miles on rear tyres (CLK), is this average?

Question-

When tyre / wheel combos change does the air volume in the tyre remain constant? (Remember the overall diameter should remain the same.)

No, I would think the air volume reduces with lower profile tyres, but the pressure can be the same.

Even though the width would have increased?

On the flap of my W221 it says if you have the 20" wheels increase the pressure by 3lbs.

I find michelins outlast any of the other "premium" tyre brands, but for a fair bit less i find kumho's great, pretty quiet and smooth and seem to last longer than the michelins. Doubt i'll ever go back, but i'm always up for trying something new if my trusted tyre shop reccomend something...

I've always been taught that a lower profile tyre requires a slightly lower pressure...have practised this theory on all of my cars and have always achieved even wear due to weekly tyre presuure checks...

Last time i had a blow out/puncture...5 years ago.

On my W203 estate rears with the 245/225 mixed configuration and in the following order:

Continentals - 15K
Kumho KU19 (asymmetric) - 12K
Kumho KU31 (directional) -20K
Falken 452 - 10K

Needless to say I'm back on the KU31's with my current set.

Yeah, should have specified, mine have been the KU31's...brilliant for the price!

i've done a bit more 'research' now & it would appear i'm only supposed to be looking at Mercedes fit/recommended tyres? ie. pirelli p zero rosso or continental sport contact 3.

narrows the choice a little!

best prices up to now are £203.08 & £200.33, fitted. (blackcircles.com)

edit - pirelli at etyres are £192.10, fitted.

I personally wouldn't stick with the MB reccomended tyres...too much £££'s...

hmm, i know BUT, if anything went wrong, would MB turn around & say "ah well, you haven't got the recommended tyres fitted!"??

What could go wrong?
Tyres have to conform to certain standards, or else they cannot be sold.
Because MB "recommend" a certain make does not mean any of the others are not good enough. Just don't go for really cheap eastern tyres.

Quite right but MO labelled tyres have been shown by MB to compliment the car's set-up and do not adversly affect the electronic systems (ESP ASR BAS etc). This may be simply a serendipitus characteristic of that make/type of tyre or and this is more often the case, MB have worked with the tyre manufacturer to create the tyre specifically. That's not to say that that MB engineered tyre is not then also sold without the MO label.

MO simply makes it easy to select tyres that have the MB seal of approval.

I have not found any difference in price between MO and non-MO tyres of the same type / make

I'm very doubtful that MO tyres are any different at all.
Besides that, mine came with MO Conti's which were good tyres. I replaced the rears with MO Bridgestones which are not very good in the wet, I would not buy them again & have recently bought Goodyear F1 GDS3's which have been the best yet, but are not MO tyres. Go figure.

Remember also, car manufacturers have always worked with tyre manufacturers to choose the best tyre for that model, it is only recently that they have started to put MO on the sidewall.

I doubt any of the major manufacturers sell any tyre which will adversly affect ESP etc, I suspect the tyre manufacturers & MB are behind MO tyres and MB get them discounted as the tyre manufacturer expects make money on the replacements. If they had any benefits for the MB owner, they would not be slow in claiming they last longer, grip better etc etc. I remain unconvinced that MO offers any benefit at all.

I agree with you Russ! I obviously didn't convey myself clearly :o

Just because they're MO doesn't mean they are different just they are approved/tested etc..

And it's not just MB that do this, Porsche, Audi, Peugeot, BMW and Jaguar all have their own approved and identified tyres

Homologations- PE Peugeot approved tyres
- MO, MB or A-MO Mercedes approved tyres
- B or AU Audi approved tyres
- J Jaguar approved tyres
- A* or * BMW approved tyres
- N0, N1... Porsche approved tyres

well, after a bit more searching I've bitten the bullet & gone for Pirelli again. great price tho', nearly fell off my chair! :D

fully fitted, i started out at £440 for 2, getting lower quotes from the internet guys as i went along, best being dustcap.co.uk @ £367.10.

i found a recommendation on a forum for a local company last night, the guy has a Bentley & he will only use this garage now. just rang them & they've quoted me £350 - Wrights Tyres, Derby Rd, Denby - well impressed!

off to see them on Monday.

Sometimes it works like that. When Mrs Dm needed a new Michelin a very local tyre centre beat Costco, who are normally very keenly priced.

Did you try Costco.?

Pirellis are excellent tyres for grip but with that comes excessive wear......unfortunately one comes with the other.....Michelin probably best for wear but pricey.....

Fact....the only difference between "MO" tyres and "non-MO" tyres is the the MO tyres contain an ingredient input during the manufacturing process, this ingredient supposedly assists in the reduction of heat in the tyre itself......and is mostly advantageous in hotter climates....so whilst Mercedes may fit as OE, to most UK drivers it would not make one iota of difference...

i didn't ask at Costco as i wasn't looking at Michellin this time (if i remember correctly from buying for the Lexus, Costco weren't that great on price unless they'd got a special offer running at the time anyway).

got my tyres done at my local yesterday, very personal service - not something you get very often now! very happy to recommend them & i'll be using them again. :thumb:

when the old tyres were checked, 1 had a screw & a small piece of metal embedded & the other had got a mark where a screw/similar probably had been!
