Folks
I want to get my beloved 124 TE 4Matic Auto, back on the road. A winter project.
Need some help please.
When you put the car into reverse. There is an audible grating/metallic scraping sound. Like something is rubbing on the clutch or the flywheel. This happens with the car stationary in reverse gear. If I then reverse the car the sound remains the same but louder, it also adds a ticking when rolling backwards.
It is coming from the gearbox as I can hear it if I put my head next to the shifter or under the car.
Is this something that can be repaired in situ? or should I be looking for a re-con box. I believe that it is a standard gear box. The transfer box being bolted on.
