Hi all

My 129 is slowly reaching conclusion. Slowly !
I need a seat base in black leather (they just attach to the frame) as mine is knackered.
The grille has some damaged ribs. It is like an anodised bronze colour and I merrily went to my local dealer to order replacements. Seemingly it should be a black grille, mine is tarnished so replacements will look rubbish. I am watching the pennies so replacing all of them is a no go.
Anyone got/know of a grille going spare? Or have any suggestions on aftermarket replacements?

TIA

Black grille slats doesn't sound right

Mine are that bronze colour throughout - definitely not tarnished (unlike my window sills which are definitely worn at the contact points)

Hmmmm bl**dy dealers.

Anyone else comment on 129 grille colour?

What sort of damage are we talking? Mine have got a couple of small dinks from stone impacts, but I put that down to patina of age.

R129 grilles have changed a bit over the years - number of slats for a start.

As above you can order the slats individually. IIRC they are just held by a single rivet at one end, so pretty easy to replace.

John's is an eary car, 1991 so same grille as mine...

Cheers guys will look into it further. All good !

I've got an old R129 grille sitting in the cupboard which is the tarnished bronze colour. Some of the slats are damaged but the top 3 are in pretty good undamaged condition iirc. When I had a wee bump I just replaced the whole grille so this one is gathering dust.

Could sort you put a picture if these are of any use to you? Depends on which ones you're looking to replace.

I need the long top one, and the lefts and rights as attached, although the left lower one is minor.
What do you reckon? How much would you want for what you have?

Had a look at mine and can confirm that the long top one is in good condition, as are the next two down on either side, except the 3rd down on RH side has a wee bend in it that could possibly be straightened out. I will sort out a picture later today and post it so you can have a look and decide for yourself if it's any use. The bottom 3 on the LH side and bottom 2 on the RH side are pretty much unusable.

Seeing as the complete one on the eBay link above is asking £50 start, If you did want it, you could have it for £20 plus the price of postage (I'll check at the PO what this will be before sending it).

With regards to the colour of R129 grilles, when trying to replace this one I could find no current parts with this bronze colour, they just don't do them any more, if they ever did at all as there is no reference to bronze grilles at MB. The new ones from MB are definitely more of a 'grey' smoked colour as opposed to a bronze. Maybe it's a change in materials since original production? It seems the older ones have just aged to this bronze colour which makes matching with new individual blades very difficult. Some have said that the bronze colour was only for SL500 and SL600 but I couldn't find any official verification for this either.

If you want the bronze grille or blades now I think the only option is to buy an original second hand one.

In fact, in respect of all the above, I've just realised yours is a seven blade grille and mine is only a six blade!

Terribly sorry, I've no idea if they're compatible.

Damn nearly had a deal there :(
