Mercedes CLK 320 W208
Hi Everyone,

Firstly, just to introduce myself as I'm new to this site. I'd be really grateful if you could help me with a could of quick questions.

I recently bought a 00' reg CLK 320 and now have a set of 18" staggered AMG monoblock alloys that I'd like to fit to the car.

1). Will I need new bolts?

2). Will I need to have the car balanced after having them fitted

3). If anyone has done this before, are the ride an handling of the car affected?

Thanks!

Ed

Hi Ed and welcome to the forum
No you don`t need bolts, your ones should be fine
I they`re already balanced,you don`t need to do it
As for the ride, you might find it a bit different but the car will look much better once you`ve those on

Thanks, I absolutely love the car.

I'm not sure if the new wheels are already balanced as I picked them up off eBay last week.

Would you happen to know if Kwikfit or another similar garage balance these and fit them for a small price?

Also, the one thing I do want is for the car to remain looking completely standard. I've seen other CLKs with bigger wheels and the gap between the tyre and the wheel arch is too big.

If anyone has a photo of a similar set up to the one I'm looking at, with standard suspension that'd be fab.

Thanks

Ed

i think its around £30 to have 4 wheels balanced at quickfitt , probley a tenner to fit them

Kwikfit is quite unpopular with some of the members on here. Some horror stories going around:crazy:

Thought you'd want to know - I'd not take my car to one

You might get away with it, but the correct tyres would be 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear.

Any decent tyre garage can balance the wheels if neccesary. I wouldn't worry about the name of the place, but whether the person who is doing the balancing knows what they are doing and the equipment is newish and working okay.

Kwik Fit is unlikely to be any worse than any other general tyre garage for tyre balancing.

But as the wheels already have tyres fitted you probably won't need to worry - would be unusual to find people fitting tyres to 18" AMG wheels and not balacing them.

The ride will be quite a bit harsher going from 16s to 18s, but I imagine you are expecting that. A bit more tramlining etc too.

You could easily fit them yourself within 1/2 hour even using the MB supplied jack in the toolkit.

My top tips are

1) Check that you've got the right size tyres fitted to the wheels. These wheels were not fitted to the model of car that you have (they're W210 E55 wheels), so it's possible that the tyres may need replacing if that's what they came off

2) Spend a bit of time coating the wheels with a wheel sealant first, it'll make them easier to clean and keep them in good condition.

3) Avoid kerbs  With 8" and 9" wide 18s running the correct tyre sizes for your car, they will have very little rim protection - don't want to spoil them!

Car looks nice btw :)

Welcome - nice car - I'm not always mad about bigger wheels as they sometimes muck up the handling (been there oh yes!!!) but I'm pretty sure 18" er's will be ok.

Post a photo when their on.

Alloys

Went to collect the new wheels last night. Only just about managed to squeeze them in the car! They rear wheels are HUGE! 265cm wide!

Must say on first inspection I'm chuffed to bits with them. Alloys are in perfect condition and they came with a set of brand new Pirelli Tyres!

Took one out the car when I got home and took a few photos with it in front of the existing wheels to get an idea of what they will look like.

Hoping to get them fitted on Saturday. Is there really nothing else to do? Will they just bolt on and I'm ready to go??

Opinions?

Not sure where you live but if its in the South East then Wheels In Motion in Chesham, Bucks will balance, align and check everything for you.

100% rated by most people who have experience of them.

Ideally I'm after somewhere in Kent. Can anyone recommend somewhere?

Hi mate, nice wheels. They will make your CLK a harder ride and it will tramline due to the width of them. But they will fit ok.
If you descide that you are in two minds about keeping them then i might be willing to do a part exchange for my mint 17" AMG Monoblock wheels with cash my way. The rear tyres are 245 so not as wide :thumb: also be willing to do the swop over for you

Thanks for the offer Justin.

If after fitting the wheels the ride it look harsh or I don't like the look I'll probably just stick the old wheels back on.

If that's the case I'll know who to speak to for a quick sale ;-)

Ok mate, let me know. My wheels would be a good compromise and would look just as good but not drive as harsh :thumb:The CLK 55 AMG came with 17" AMG wheels ;)

I'd love a set of 18" styling IIs on my W208 CLK55 AMG :)

I'll swap you the wheels for your engine? hahahahaha

So are the wheels I've got called Styling II's?

Hi Eddie,

The wheels will fit and they are 'Styling II' AMG wheels, but the tyres you have fitted are the wrong size.

You need 255/35/18s for the rear and 225/40/18 for the front :)

Otherwise they will probably rub in places, and the gearing/speedo will be slightly out.

Will
