190e 2.0 manual or Auto for all round use?

Got your PM.
Sorted that.
Not sure what you wanted to know about the Truck Tech bits....I work in Sales Support and I'm not a Tech guy.

Just curious as I run my own trucks.

No probs.

I work in Sales Support working for CharterWay as you now know.
I work with Vans & Trucks as well as Mitsubishi Fuso and their Canter range.

I mainly provide Contract Hire quotations for Vans & Trucks as well as provide quotations for Service Contracts.

You have a few Dealerships near you IIRC you have SG Smiths, S&B Commercials and Sparshatts....and a bit further into Essex/Suffolk you have Orwells. They would advise on Contract Hire and Service Contracts and then get in touch with myself to do the sums etc.

I have owned W201s and W202s (190Es and C200, C230K).

My opinion is that a late 190E is a better car than an early C Class - probably upto the point where they were facelifted (1997?).

Now that they are down at near enough bangernomics prices, I would go for a good 190E over a leggy C Class facelift - and either of them over a pre-facelift C Class.

Sorry to anyone with a pre-facelift W202.

The 190E was the first Merc with the plastic bumper look (I await to be corrected) and had much more in common with the W124 E Class than the W202 C Class.

With a fairly substantial budget, I still prefer a £1000 190E over a C Class worth many times that...

:o

Thanks Toni.
We had one in our hub building (190E in white) and it looked great for it's age. I even like the wheel trims (which I imagine are expensive to replace). They look nice with the AMG style flat alloy wheels too.
Perhaps I should stick to my guns as per my post title and find a nice later spec 190E 2.0 auto.
I'm in no rush at all.......while I have my Clio I have excellent MPG. :D

The one I have has no rust, everything electrical works, but needs a few things doing.
I have replaced the spheres for the self levelling suspension and replaced the exhaust.
It needs a new exhaust manifold (I have this and a new gasket kit, but it needs fitting) and a handbrake lever(the button is missing) and can then be mot'd.
Even the original scorpian alarm works:D

I need it off my drive fast (mrs complaining:rolleyes: ), so come make me an offer . It stands me in £500, but will take a drop on this to get shot of.

The one bonus with an prefacelift C, is that it just has a fourspeed box, essentially the same box as a 124 or 190, so you don't find your £900 banger needing a £1500 transmission out of the blue.

C-Class worries:

Wiper mechs

Cats falling to bits

Diffs on C180s (same diff as the 190E which is also a problem unit)

ECUs on C180s (the one under the washer bottle that costs a fortune)

Headgaskets

190E worries:

Hidden serious rust

Wiper motors

Headgaskets

Diffs

Sloppy steering

Collapsed seat bases/scabby driver's seats

I would be tempted if it was (unless it is) a late spec 190e and it had those bits fitted and the MOT. My mechanic ability stretches to disc/pads and servicing you see.:D

Having had both 190's and a C class, I completely agree with Swis Toni.

Get a 190e 2.00 auto, you won't regret it.

I have an excellent 190E auto for sale. She is in perfect condition.

I have seen a lovely looking one on Piston Heads website that has caught my attention.

Might be interested in yours too.
Can you drop me a PM with details?
or an email address so that I can contact you?

Many thanks

Steve

One thing to remember with the late 190Es is that they have cats, which really are expensive, although you could bin it and fit normal frontpipes, but I don't know where that would leave the MOT emissions...

I can't understand all the hype on the forum regards manual gearbox on the Mercs.

I have a C-200 with manual gearbox and I love it good MPG up to the auto I change gear when I want not when the car thinks I should and with an auto that is too early.

Auto boxes cause more problems (just see the forum for that) expensive to repair or replace, my car with 65,000 is still as smooth as silk on changing up and down.

Another gripe is because Mercedes put the handbrake on the floor as a peddle you needed the auto for better control, all I can say to that is learn to drive because I have no problems on hillstarts or general driving just look at the tacho to see when the clutch is biting and if you drive without the radio on listen to the engine

As long it's registered before 1 August 1992 it doesn't require a CAT as the stricter emissions test came in on this date.
technically a car doesn't need a CAT anyway as long as it passes the emissions test.

A 1991 to early 92 seems to be about my budget so I should be all right.
if it went wrong I'd just have a custom stainless exhaust fitted (a subtle sensible one) with lifetime warranty. :D

Perhaps its just a comfort thing....that the idea of driving a Merc ismaximum benefit for minimum effort and comfort factor of not having to use the clutch.
I think on any other car I'd go for a manual as I agree with better MPG etc....but I suppose for better residuals and desirability then if the Auto's are more popular then maybe they might be a better choice in the long run????????

Give me a call on 02392570123.

I'll call you from the office at some point tomorrow if your ok with this????;)
