190E Advice Needed

Not a great deal. A new set of tyres would probably set you back more than the car should cost.
I wouldnt part with a penny more than £500 in the present economic climate. And thats assuming it is as good as infered and described. Rust is not mentioned by the seller so I assume its rust free. If its not, then I wouldnt give anything for it.

It's worth lots more than £500.

Last of the line 'L' plate 190E, with a 2.0 engine, auto gearbox, almandine metallic paintwork, alloy wheels and an airbag - with 64k miles.

If the service history stacks up, I'd say it could be worth £1500 or so, maybe cleaned up properly - £2k or more.

Marque specialists would be asking a lot more than that!

They're worth quite a bit more than early W202s for a good reason...

Eg - Avantgarde are selling this 'LE' which is a 1.8 with 49k miles for £5.5k.

Not saying that they'll get all of that, and obviously you'd need to spend a few quid tidying that eBay car to get it up to retail condition, but it illustrates the sort of money good, low mileage clean cars can command. Certainly more than £500 anyway...

Thanks Will I thought £500.00 pound was on the low side, the advert also says good tyres so should not need any for a while.

I live in Bristol so may go and have a look at it I would use it to replace my W202 C-200 that I want to get rid of.

Well if you decide to look over it and wish to ask any questions, feel free :)

I've owned 2x W202s in the past, and now own 2 W201s, feel much more at home with them

That eBay car wants a new rear bumper piece (eBay/breakers), some garnish mouldings for the grille (chrome slats - about a pound or two each from MB), some original HT leads (look at the orange ones under the bonnet) and a good clean up.

I would personally remove the towbar and fit a Becker/Blaupunkt radio, plus some new MB plates, but then I'm a bit fussy...

If it's as good as I expect it should be, it'll be a great car and probably less rusty than most W202s.

It will be interesting to see what it fetches. Even last year you could pick up a very nice late 190E 2.0 for just over £700 with a bit of patience.
I saw one fetch £720 with 72K Fsh miles.

A few years ago - maybe. But not nowadays. Values of cars - all cars - have plummeted and if you REALLY want to sell you have to be realistic.
Dealers forecourts are bursting wih preowned cars they cant move.
And with one or two exceptions, even shifting heavilly discounted new cars is nigh on impossible.
Times have changed................

Yes but I think the sort of people who look out for specific cars - such as clean low mileage W124/201s etc tend to be wiser and know exactly what they're buying.

It's great that sometimes people overlook these models as it sometimes makes them easier to find for those 'in the know'

Marque specialists and dealers know this, source good cars and then wait for buyers who haven't got the time/patience to source their own and prep it up.

I have made a disclaimer for Avantgarde in that I don't expect them to achieve a sale price of £5.5k in a short period of time, but you know they'll find someone who wants a mint car and will pay the majority of that.

The point of the link wasn't to say that I value their car @ £5.5k, but to rubbish VTD's suggestion that it wouldn't be worth 'a penny more than £500'...

Thanks guys
I had a low mileage 190E that I sold 4 years ago I got £1100.00 for it which I was more than pleased with, what I liked about it was it was a solid car and I was able to look after it myself because as we all know they are a basic car.

It appears to be an OK looking car, the paint is a bit flat on it but should come up nicely with some tlc. I wouldn't pay more than £600-£700 as 190s don't seem to be selling very well.

You might want to verify the mileage on the car too, its not impossible that 10 owners have done a total of 64k but I would check any paperwork to see if the mileage corresponds with the odometer. Mine has 79k and has had 5 previous owners, but I have full service history back to the year dot. I've seen other lowish mileage 190s with around the same number of owners - though 10 is on the high side, which is why I'd just check the paperwork out.

Don't forget to check out the jacking points for rot, and if the owner doesn't mind, to pull the bootliner to check for rust in the boot wells.

As for that Avantgarde car, £5500! Good luck to them if someone is willing to pay that price for it, but with a bit of homework and patience you can get 190 with even lower mileage for less than 50% of the price of this one. I can recall two (one on EBay and the other on Autotrader) with less than 35k and for £2k with fsh

They sure have for Hummer. UK registrations are up 14,100% on 2007..

normanr, keep us posted if you end up buying it or not.

I would say don't rush. There are low mileage examples out there at reasonable prices and they pop up on Ebay and Autotrader from time to time. I almost made the mistake of rushing when I couldn't find a 190LE, then one day THE car appeared and I knew it was the right one.

Out of interest Dieselman, do you know how much Cadillac UK are selling. If I had the cash to splash (which I don't), I would be tempted into buying an STS.

I agree with Will, they are lovely cars, the thing that would worry me about this one is 10 owners....seems a lot:eek:

This was what Value my car came up with.
As you say Ian 10 owners is a lot

OK I am biased, but...

Having owned W202s and W201s, a late W201 is a far better car than an early W202 in many ways.

I have an LE and spent time looking for the "right" one. Having recently considered selling, I have come to the conclusion that for around £1k it is a package that is not going to be matched by any alternatives.

These are not new cars and consequently there is the full range from "scrap" to "mint" out there - without seeing the car it is likely to be difficult to value.

I know of 2 people who have bought 190Es recently, wanting something well built (to W124 standards), not too big and easy to maintain at home.

W201 any day :)
