Hey have a 1992 190e 2.3 auto and my car over heated and then this light brown crap started to squirt out of the over flow tube that is on the coolant tank?? Can any one help me out?

It sounds like you may have blown your head gasket I am afraid.

How many miles has the engine done? It wouldnt be about 120,000 miles would it?

As SPIKE says---- its usually no 4 cylinder-- runs hottest but could be anywhere on the head. Do get the head checked / skimmed flat or your new gasket won't last long! Use only bona fide MB head gaskets or those made by Victor Reinz REINZ Dichtungs GmbH -

My car has 107k on it,another question though if I had a bad gasket wouldn't my car be over heating,Im thinking that it might be that my radiator is just clogged up because if I put antifreeze into it and when I give it some gas the anti goes down and then it just starts to over fill so I was thinking it might a bad water pump or radiator is clugged, because my gasket has no leaks or nothing ?

Sorry but I have to agree with Spike, just coz its not leaking around the head doesn't mean it's not the head the damage will be inside the head.

Ok but if the head gasket or something wrong with the head inside wouldn't it run rough or different but my car runs like a champ, it doesn't over heat the temperature is fine the fan doesn't start spinning fast it doesn't smell no oil leaks but the water or anti-freeze starts to boil and starts to spit back so I'm think because my radiator doesn't get water through it and the water doesn't move so it starts to boil and heat up and begins to come back through the only way possible which is the tank for anti- freeze, or the maybe the water pump is not pumping any water so it stays in one spot

It will be your head gasket as said, if the gasket has gone between a water jacket and oil gallery then all your going to notice is mixing of fluids.

So, how do you explain the oil in the coolant if they are not mixing through a blown head gasket?

Had the HG done on mine a few years ago - no overheating at all but oil drops in the coolant. That's just how they go. The gasket corrodes allowing it to mix, its very important to change your coolant every few years.

On the m102 its not that hard a job, mine was done in a day and cost £350 (I chanced not skimming because the head face was so clean and no overheat).

Use new head bolts.

My car has 107k on it,

That is almost bang on the mileage when these head gaskets tend to go - they all do it.

Speak to a good independent specialist to get in investigated and priced up for a head gasket replacwement. While the head is off, I suggest sending it off to an engineering shop for a complete refurb as well as a skim.

When I did my W124CE this cost £600 all in including the head refurb.

You could do it yourself if you are interested. Not that difficult even with a V8. That is exactly what happened with the 450 didn't really run any differently or overheat although it was using coolant. There was not much oil in the coolant but it was getting into the oil particularly noticeable at the top end. Took both heads off and had them skimmed, valves reseated as MB say take same amount off them as skimmed off heads, new valve seals, timing chain and guides etc. Just got to restart it.

Does the car have an oil cooler & if it does do the pipes for it run through the rad?

Thanks for all the help guys probably will be changing HG but I have a few more questions just to be certain that my gasket is bad, if my head gasket was bad would there be water in my oil pan? And if it was bad would my car have a miss fire?

Its all down to degree of leakage and when and where it occurs on the gasket leading a variety of symptoms. These can be very minor at the start or major with huge clouds of steam coming out the exhaust and the car coolant boiling. If there is any coolant leaking into the combustion chamber its most likely to happen as the engine is cooling down= no combustion pressure in the cylinder but pressure in the coolant circuit- most likely symptom would be a slight misfire on cold start up but that would soon clear as the engine warmed up. One good thing to check is the condition of the spark plugs. They should all be a nice brown colour. If one looks " oily" and black that's probably due to water. A quick and easy[ non invasive] test is to to use a standard exhaust gas analyser to " sniff"= sample the headspace= the gas above the coolant [ the empty top of the coolant expansion tank is good ] for the presence of combustion gases. If you detect any you can be pretty sure the CHG is on the way out.

ps presence of water in your oil can be quite subtle. often just a white trace in the otherwise very black oilon the dip stick ---a bit like a colour code trace in vehicle wiring if you know what I mean.

Alright guys thanks for all the help starting my head gasket project tomorrow any tips because this is going to be my first time dealing with chains instead of timing belt.

Main problem you will have is with the pin that holds the top timing chain guide to the head- you need to remove this as it ties the head to the block. Other thing is to reset the timing chain tensioner when you rebuild the engine otherwise you will over tension the chain and break it. see instructions in engine section here. Untitled Document
