1988 300SE, 10,000 miles

SOLD! £8400 with fee's. Bargain in my book, only wish I had somewhere to store another garage queen.

are you serious, it sold for 8400, wow thats not a lot of car for a lot of money[/QUOTE] VERY! How can you say that a classic W126 S-Class, that some would argue is the finest MB have built, is not a lot of car? If the condition reflects the mileage, then it is a serious bargain. Expect to see it at one of the specialists with a price tag somewhat higher than 8400.

, shame the spec is so low.

that was my point, the listing states it has central locking and electric windows, wow that is some equipment list!!!!!!!

it doesnt even have alloys!!!! never mind air con or leather! :wallbash:

i am no expert on mercedes or cars for that matter but in my opinion you could buy a hell of a lot more car for 8400, i know people will come on here and say but its a classic s class and i appreciate its a mercedes from when SOME people say mercedes built proper cars but im sorry i just dont get it, 8400 would by you a really nice car with bags of equipment for example you could get a really nice CL500 facelift model or modern S-class diesel for that with all the TOYS!!!!!!

never mind the s-class diesel, i bet if you kept the a cl500 and this 300se over a few years i bet the running costs would be very similar, i dont know figures but i know this, my 94 s124 320 gets through heaps of fuel so i guess this 300 is no better, infact its prob worse because its older and bigger! and then there is the daily maintanence of keeping the 23 year old car in that tip top condition and replacing all the bits that have perished over the 23 year period. i am no expert but have read on this forum that engines dont like standing, wouldnt there be some issues like engine seals etc.

i dont want to offend anyone, its just my opinion, i can think of lots of mercs that i would rather spend 8400 on. a w211 320 cdi estate would be nice but i know its not the same car, the w211 is much better!!:D

I really like these se models and if this was a 420 or 500 with a big list of equipment i could almost understand it!

each to there own, no offence, i am not giving fact here just my personal opinon!

Opinion...
For me cars with that kind of millage are to stay away from.Usually they are not being used which for a car itself it's not a good thing.I would rather spend 500quid on proper spec w126,doesn't matter millage, get it overhaul - paint, suspension, leathers and I still wouldn't be around 8400 figure. Why it is all about the millage,it seems.Better to owe a car with few miles on,full service and knowing exactly what happend to the car during it's lifetime.Possibly one or two owners.
My last w220 had 150K and I got it from it first owner,it even had original invoice when purchased new!!!Car was mint, much better then the ones stating 50,60K on the clock.
Just don't get it.

How any S Class can be called basic or poverty spec is beyond me! Whilst this one may not have Electric everything, self level etc, that to me would be a bonus. As for not having leather, it does have velour, a very expensive option at the time, which I think was as much if not more than hide. Lets not lose sight of the fact that this is a 10000 mile motorcar, and all the alternative examples given for 8k would have somewhat higher miles and little if no collectors potential. This is a collectors piece, and yes, from a time when MB knew how to build a car.

dont take this the wrong way, and i dont know a lot about the s class, etc so im not stating fact just what i understand, but if this car is an S-CLASS wouldnt it say so on the boot!!!!

in my opinion its not an S-CLASS its a 300se, am i correct in saying that the S-CLASS arrived after this car!

if this car gave birth to the idea of the s class then its like calling a ford escort a ford focus, just because it came first, i dont understand your logic

i may be wrong on this as i dont know alot about these cars but i have spent hrs looking at them on ebay as i really like them (with all the equipment and defo not that awful velour), it may have been extra at the time but im sorry i just cant do that!!!!!

i really like them but dont think they are an S-class

please feel free to educate me

I feel free to.

Look at the W140 - the 600SEL is the S600 LWB

The 300SE is the S300

Both the same car, identical give or take parking sensor changes and rear indicator changes, just under different names as Mercedes changed the way their cars were named

I think it is correct to call it an S-class. It's just that, in those days, the 'S' appeared after the numeric bit, not before.

thanks for the info.like i said i know very little about the technical aspect including badging etc, all i know is what i like, and i still think that car needs more toys to be worth that,

just my opinion, thanks again for the info

Please read here to find out a little more about Mercedes-Benz's 'sonderklasse' saloons http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes_S-Class

Silver and blue combo on 500SE is odd - but nice
300SE - hubcaps quite a few had them.Velour cost @ 1100 - rare and v desirable.
Mercedes 420 SE road test car came without A/C, Leather , alloys, cruise control , leather - and not even velour - just boggo cloth

I wouldn't. You can see that that one's done 100,000 miles. The auction one looks brand new.

the auction car may look brand new and its clear for all to see its been looked after, but i would have concerns about the lack of use and maintenance this car has had, at the end of the day engine components deteriorate over time, and the only good bit of the car (if you can call it that) is the velour interior which i think it looks terrible (personal), in addition the blue body work may be showroom but does nothing for the car (personal) and lack of alloys also helps to bring down the overall look of the car.

the metalic grey car i have listed has a classic colour combination (i had an 04 boxtser in the same combo and i love it) again personal.

i think you must have overlooked the description because its not 100k its 91k, i guess the person who buys it will prob do around 6k a year so will take over a year from now before it hits that 100k mark

TWO OWNERS FROM NEW
COST OVER £50,000 TWENTY TWO YEARS AGO
FULL SERVICE HISTORY 23 SERVICE STAMPS ( 15 MERCEDES MAIN DEALER SERVICE STAMPS )

i would rather put my money into a well serviced well used car that has had regular maintenance.

...at the end of the day engine components deteriorate over time....

Not really and besides, the silver one has duct tape holding the air intake together.:rolleyes:

The fact is the blue one IS worth £8400 because that's what someone paid for it. You don't get it, that's fine, we're all different :)
