1993 (airbag equipped) R129 ~ How do I remove steering wheel?

Having replaced my broken speedo with a 'known-good' donor today, I'm still left with exactly the same problem - a speedo which doesn't work and which dances all over the gauge.

With great difficulty I managed to remove the binnacle, insert the new speedo and replace it in the dash with the steering wheel in situ. However, so tight is the squeeze to put back in, I've caused a tiny bit of damage to the soft plastic dash top, whilst pushing the clips on the back of the binnacle past it.

As the replacement speedo hasn't solved my car's problem, I'd like to return the original (with the correct mileage) but I don't want to cause any further damage, so I want to remove the steering wheel, to ease insertion!

Please can someone advise, how best to remove the steering wheel? My car is a '93 and it's wheel is fitted with an airbag. Whilst working on the dash today, I disconnected the battery, which I would obviously do again tomorrow, before working on the wheel. Question is, how do I remove the horn pad (front cover)? It doesn't seem to want to pull off, and then is it a case of getting the airbag pack out of the way and then undoing a securing bolt?

I would really appreciate some guidance, as I don't want to cause any further damage to any trim!

Lastly, seeing as the speedo head itself doesn't seem to be to blame, and two experts have both concluded that the sensor it takes it's reading from is good, what else can be causing my speedo problem? :fail

Cheers!

Look at the back of your steering wheel and you should see a couple of allen bolts that hold the airbag in place.

I think it might be the same as a W202.
Wait 20 minuets after disconnecting battery before you unplug the Airbag.

Steering wheel nut will be VERY VERY tight, have a helper hold the wheel to counter the force of your 10mm ? Hex key used to undo steering wheel bolt

The centre 10 mm allen bolt is an absolute swine I have broken a Halfords socket doing one

Removing the wheel doesn't make that much difference. It's such an annoying job I;d leave the whel on

The flickering needle is probably caused by the speedo drive cable. I don't think they're particularly hard to change

It's all about having decent tools for the job. Ive never had a problem with removing the centre allen bolt myself.

I did however hit myself in the face with the steering wheel the first time I removed one. I learnt not to fully undo the bolt before losening the steering wheel.
