1995 SL500 strange idle and rocking today

We all do short runs, but I think the point being made is that your regular run is not adequate to warm up the engine and disperse moisture in your distributor cap. But it depends. My regular run is 6.5 miles without any traffic lights, but I come back after 2 hours so the engine has not fully cooled down before I set off back. If you drive in heavy traffic it is feasible that some of your 5 miles is spent with the engine warm.

Hmm...

It's a pain - don't get these problems with my X-Type 3 Litre V6.

Will see what they come back with this time when it's looked at - I'm quite pleased that it's away for Christmas to be honest - will be locked away in a garage which I can't do at home and I can't use it anyway as got family staying and it's not practical enough.

PS - Like the "Fellow Sufferer" bit!

These days it's not a problem (tempting fate there). At the onset of the damp season - early October - I pull the cap and rotor arm, dry everything thoroughly and spray silicone generously. Wipe it down, put it back together, and it lasts the winter. But I typically do two journeys a week of around 13 miles each so it is getting warmed up.

Good Luck

All,

An update.

Was due to get her back today (advised I wasn't in a hurry) and I have been advised that she's still not right. When cold, all is fine and works really well. I have been told that it's like when she gets to a certain temperature she starts spluttering and jumping, and then cuts out.

Only when she's cooled down again (4 hours or so later) will she start again, then the cycle repeats.

Anyone got any pointers as to where to go next? I want her back!

The suggestions made previously have already been done...

Thanks in advance.

only when hot? I automatically think CPS but it could also be something on the high tension side or fuelling I guess.

Most often on these though it is plugs, leads or dizzy cap.

Ive had these issues on my E500. Drove me potty... Like you I replaced arms and caps several times, each time using Bosch... would be fine until getting hot or after a longish drive.

Turned out to be the Bosch distributor caps... They are made really badly and they dont seal properly... I posted about this issue on the 500E board.

Dont use dealer supplied Bosch items or after market ones.

Use the Beru ones only, available from Euro Car Parts. They are cheaper than the bosch but made better.

Mine never refused to start though, that to me indicates Crank Position Sensor.

All,
Getting desperate now - still no further on and we're all out of ideas - Mechanic is completely flumoxed by this.

So far Disty caps, HT Leads, Moisture behind Disty Caps, Crank Position Sensor etc. have all been eliminated.

Does anyone have any other suggestions of where we can go here?

Thanks in advance.

Going back through the posts, you mention that you've checked the loom, but have you actually cut through the outer insulation to expose the wires within the loom to see if the insulation covering the wires is crumbling?...best place to check is by the coil packs under the covers.

Secondly dirty throttle body...has this been cleaned?

Thirdly vacuum leaks?

All,

A potential encouraging update.

She has finally been put onto a computer and a problem with the Mass Airflow Sensor / Meter has been identified - this is interesting as, to digress slightly, I purchased a hard-top a couple of weeks ago and the place I got it from is a Mercedes Restoration place - whilst there I mentioned the problems with her and they said either Crank Position Sensor or Mass Airlow Sensor / Meter.

Anyhoos, it would appear that this part on the SL500 is not a cheapy - £600 or so from Merc direct or £450 for a non-Merc one, but sourced one off eBay for £100 used with a warranty. So hopefully that will arrive on Tuesday and can be fitted and all will then be fine. Frustratingly, I am away for work on Wednesday and Thursday so, if it does solve the problem, won't be able to collect her until Friday morning, but at least there is now a positive step and there could finally be some light at the end of the tunnel.

But, this does lead to an interesting question. As advised previously, various parts have been changed already with no success and, so far as I am aware, these are still on the car. This means that I am potentially looking at a bill for some parts (and probably associated labour) that I actually did not need in the end. So should I state my case on this and hope that a reduction is forthcoming or just be grateful that there's some other bits on there that have been renewed - what's everyone's thoughts on this?

It's a tricky one. If you have a generally high opinion of the garage and are sure that they always act in your best interests then I would probably pay up. No garage has a crystal ball.

What is your relationship like with the garage?

I suspect going in guns blazing wont help but if you are a long term customer, a quiet word might result in some sort of agreeable gesture.

Relationship good - been going there approaching 3 years now I think it is with both cars so in that respect all Ok.

Just feel a bit narked that it's been 3 months and we only just got progress this week and seems to have been (potentially) a quick resolution after all that...

Driveway looks bear without her...

Without re reading the whole of this thread, did they not put it on a STAR before or don't they have one?

They don't have one - she was taken to a local Merc place this week and plugged in. Hence where we got the Mass Air Flow Meter error from.
