1995 SL500 strange idle and rocking today

Ive had these issues on my E500. Drove me potty... Like you I replaced arms and caps several times, each time using Bosch... would be fine until getting hot or after a longish drive.

Turned out to be the Bosch distributor caps... They are made really badly and they dont seal properly... I posted about this issue on the 500E board.

Dont use dealer supplied Bosch items or after market ones.

Use the Beru ones only, available from Euro Car Parts. They are cheaper than the bosch but made better.

Mine never refused to start though, that to me indicates Crank Position Sensor.

That is interesting. My experience (limited though it is) is the exact oposite of yours. Had constant problems with moisture and Beru caps and rotors. Finally shelled out for Bosch and touchwood, problem sorted.

.

But, this does lead to an interesting question. As advised previously, various parts have been changed already with no success and, so far as I am aware, these are still on the car. This means that I am potentially looking at a bill for some parts (and probably associated labour) that I actually did not need in the end. So should I state my case on this and hope that a reduction is forthcoming or just be grateful that there's some other bits on there that have been renewed - what's everyone's thoughts on this?

Without Star or other diagnostic code readers this can happen - throw parts unnecessary! However, these early M119s eat dizzy caps and rotors regularly especially in climate such as ours, but not as frequent as you did. Have you replaced the most neglected seal/insulator under the rotor ?

I hope MAF solves the issue of "strange idle and rocking" . Though i think the "spluttering and jumping" and no start after warmed up is a seperate issue !

Can u confirm if the wiring loom is good or has been replaced ?

Good news, everyone!

Got her back today - all sorted and all working really well - and another years MOT on her as well as that runs out on the 18th.

So it was indeed the Air Flow Sensor in the end.

Here's to a few more miles of enjoyable motoring - can go and collect the new hard top next weekend now too!
