Hi all, my father in law has got a 1996 C200 petrol automatic he has had the car for around 4 years, only done around 100K with FSH. He has started to have idle/starting problems the last month, it has been to the local garage for the last 3 weeks and the bill seems to be getting higher but the fault still there.

The fault is not there all the time, it runs perfect for a few days then when starting the engine does not idle, you can hold the revs at 2000rpm but anything lower the engine just cuts out. Then the fault is there for a few days then back to normal.

The garage has changed : the crank sensor, fuel pump, had the ECU in for repair then into merc for reprogramming all fault codes reset, everything cleaned and checked but fault still there.....please help as he is a pensioner and does not have long pockets, appreciate any help or suggestions........many thanks in advance. We are located near Bury-St-Edmunds. Steve

No sure about the local garage, but it did go into Mercedes in Bury St Edmunds to be checked and reset after the ECU was repaired. I just like to know if anyone has had something similar.......Thanks Steve

If his car has an electronic throttle I would guess a dodgy throttle actuator/ limit switch.
