Just purchased my first Mercedes a 1998 C200 sport auto. The kickdown doesnt seem to work properly. It just makes the car rev high and loose power when i push down on the pedal.
Where do I start looking ? I was thinking transmission fluid maybe low ?? Or faulty kickdown switch ? Anyone else had this problem ?
Thanks

Certainly start with checking the ATF fluid level; this must be done with the transmission hot and engine running, drive for about 10 miles to ensure the transmission is fully warmed up.

Then move the gear lever from Park to Drive for about 15 seconds, then to Reverse and then back to Park before checking

The purpose of kick down is to make the engine "rev high". A faulty MAF sensor will make the engine lose power, thereby not beeing able to convert the high revs into forward push.

The purpose of kickdown is to force a downchange in the gears, if the engine then revs high but this does not result into accelration then this could be down to a gearbox or torque convertor problem.

Ihave same problem , and was told it is a sensor.

Think i will get it checked on my mates fault code reader and see if anything crops up. Very frustrating though especially trying to overtake if you forget and press the pedal too far down.

Had same problem ended up the cat 1 had collapsed and blocked and damaged cat2 both changed now ok.Save yourself a lot of time and take it to a reputable garage that has the right diagnostics.

Sounds like the throttle transducer to me, when you hit 'kick down' it gets confused ............ only had it once though so may be wrong!

Common on c220cdi

And the throttle position sensor is common on the w210 diesel

This however is a m111 petrol so will be a different issue, if you find your putting your foot down to over take and it coughs and splutters/holds back and you have a c180/c200 m111 there is a very high chance it's the Hfm air mass sensor.

Ive been told if it was the MAF sensor it wud run like a bag of w*nk, but mine runs fine!

If it's revving up and going nowhere then low ATF is the most likely culprit. Check the history to see if it's ever been changed, if not then it's probably about time anyway.

Yes it revving high but not doing anythink. I did think about checking the atf fluid but it doesnt hav a dipstick lol mayb worth getting it checked at a garage i suppose.
Also if it is low can it just be topped up or does it need a complete change incuding filter? How much shud i expect 2 pay?

Thanks

Just put my foot down in park and it revs up to about 4300 rpm and keeps bouncing there :-)

If it revs cleanly to 4kish then air mass will be ok then, I doubt any garage will have a dip stick, you will need to find a Indy.

If the fluid I'd low yes it can be topped up, although it would probably benefit from a transmission service.
