Another "What Oil" question from a new owner!

What viscosity would people reccomend for a 100K 1998 C240> From what I have read so far a 0w-40 is not reccomended at these miles (although that seems to be more because of possible seal leakage than protection isssues). So what do people reccomend at the bottom end given the number of miles - 0, 5 or 10?

If useing use fully synthetic, I would go for 05-40 Chevron @ approx £9.99 for 4 litres from Costco. Says meets MB spec on the container. Others may disagree, but this is my personal choice.

There is a report in this months trade press saying how important it is to use only the oils that the manufacturer says. A case in question is the new fords where the engine oil can only be Fords WSS-M2C202-B.

This is even more important on transmissions where the torque loadings on spiral, hypoid simulate more of a grinding effect than on straight cut gears

TV, I fully agree with you on the transmission oil, only use MB spec. I do, honest !

On the fully syn engine oil, I am willing to take a chance on what Chevron claim, to meet MB spec. However, I aim to drain mine every 5K miles from now on.

Hi C240yaz - that's cheap! But like you I'll be looking for very regular changes, so I'm tempted. Chevon at 6K will intervals will end up cheaper than Mobil 1 at 10K intervals - assume the spec Chevron mention is 229.3 (not .1?)

P.S. Noticed looking though the forums you've just been though all the things I'm intenting on doing on my C240 (W202) over the next few months. First job though, pick it up - 10:00am tomorrow (counting the hours).

Not sure on the exact spec wording for Chevron, but I do know that it is suited to mine, 203 v6. Remember that you will need 2 x 4 litre containers for an oil change.

Note that Mobil 1 is also available at Costco for around £23 plus vat for 4 ltrs.

Only remaining things I am waiting to do on mine is fuel filter and cabin filter. I ordered these yesterday morning from Eurocarparts and they just arrived 10 mins ago. Now that's what I call next day delivery !

Hope you enjoy your new car.
