Hi ,does anyone have a 1999 mb e280 if so what rust issues have you had and is it covered by mb 30 year warranty. i have wheel arch rust which has lifted the paint but not removed it allthough i suspect paint will fall off eventally , also if the paint has lifted and bubbled does this mean its rusted from the inside out.

I think M-B keep moving the goal posts about 30 years, 8 years sticks in my mind. try your local dealer he will be the best person for advice, at the end of the day the dealer will want the work.

ive not had the car long bought it from my father inlaw, i heard you must own your car 6 months before making a claim against the rust warranty and also have mbsh, well my mot is due in july so i will have a service done at the same time and then speak to a dealer if it is only 8 years nothing lost will still get it sorted out its just a bonus if mb sort the rust for me ,its not to bad at the moment as its allways been kept in a garage but it will soon be kept on my drive when the father inlaws new car is delivered , have you ever heard of a mb garage putting a claim into mb on behalf of the owner, im sure i would have a better chance of my warranty claim (if more than 8 years) going through if the mb garage put the claim in for me or have i got it all wronge.

Check / inspect your front crossmember as these are prone to severe rust (known design issue /located front of engine bay above undertray and is visible part), i had my changed FOC by MB a few weeks ago, my car is 9 years old, they accepted Indy + MB service history...

Thank you for that info i hadnt even thought about looking anywher else other than the body ,i hope mb dont refuse any future rust claims as it sounds like repairs could be exspensive (maybe i should of kept my ford :) .

Just got mine and although the rust has been touched up (the car is still solid unlike many i saw) the arches were full of muck. TBH its no wonder many rust out when they are permanently damp. Give it a good brush out if you haven't for a wile, sure it will help. I'll be hitting mine with the underseal next week too. Doubt MB will want to know about a 17 year old C-Class MB history or no!

i knew my mb had some wheel arch rust but when i drove it i couldnt say no, its always been kept in a garage so rust isnt to bad although i need to do a more detailed inspection after reading some of the post on this forum , how do you apply the underseal and is there a certain one you can reccomend.is it your first merc.

1st Merc but a bit of a veteran of rust issues having had 3 minis!

Rust is an ongoing battle with anything like this, the main thing it to make sure youget all the mud from next to the paintwork out of the arches. Rub back the rusty bits, paint on Krust, prime it, rub it down and paint it then paint or spray on the underseal. the main one is WaxOyl, comes in a sort of yellow/black tin and looks like tar. It will trap water under it so make sure it is super dry before you apply and it is best done year on year. I'd just take the wheel off and do what you can see.

No real secret to it and fairly cheap to do yourself. Some garages will do it all for you at a cost of around £100 (try Jap car specialists because Jap import cars aren't undersealed at the factory - they don't salt the roads in Japan so no need - many import specialists will have it as a cost option.

Its a good few hours work yourself without proper ramps and at least you'll know you did it right and save a fair bit!

thanks for the info this is only my second car my first one was a 2003 focus so never had to deal with rust , i actually like the idea of looking after my car properly now and carrying out work myself although i maystill have a good claim with mb will have to see once ive had service and mot if refused will have to have a go, anyway thaks again will keep you informed on where i get with mb when the time comes.
