Just wondering if anybody has come across this problem.
When I accelerate my car I can hear a noise coming from some place in the engine bay. The noise is a diesely rattle just like a faulty injector. It is not there at a steady speed and only when accelerating at all revs.
I assumed it was an injector problem or an EGR problem until I discovered the following.
The noise is not there when there is any deviation of the steering to the right-it just disappears. The noise remains when the steering is turned to the left.

I then assumed that it may have been the power steering pump but the noise is not there if I put the car into neutral and maintain the revs.

I have checked everything underneath and could not find anything wrong.

I had a noise from the steering column heat shield hitting exhaust
Thanks 142. I checked everything in that line. I have a worse problem now. While on a motorway journey and accelerating away from a tool booth the epc light came on in the dash and the car ground to a halt.
I succeeded in starting it with easy start and managed to get home on gentle acceleration.
I could drive it at any speed once I did not accelerate.
When I accelerated loads of black smoke came out the exhaust and the car would stop again, requiring easy start to restart.
I did a leak back test and no 4 was just pouring the diesel back.
This injector was fully overhauled five months ago so it is going back under warranty.

The saga continues. I decided that I would have all the injectors checked out while no 4 was being overhauled under warranty.
Injectors two; three and four came out without a problem. Number one refuses to budge.
I have it presently soaking in a mixture of carb cleaner; electrical contact cleaner and diesel

Try coca cola

Try coca cola
I was ready to try the coke trick but I read elsewhere, probably here, that the constituent of Coca Cola that helps break the seal is in far greater quantities in carb cleaner. The diesel mix helps it penetrate better and I threw in electrical contact cleaner just because I thought it would help.
I spoke with a mercedes mechanic and he said the following is guaranteed to release the injector.
Let the above concoction seep in for 24 hrs.
Remove the injector clamp.
Place a piece of timber over the injector to save the pipe being bent and possibly the bonnet.
remove the fan fuse. No 51 on the C class.
Start the car and hold it on 2000 rpm until the temp reaches 100.
Bring the revs up to 4000 rpm in short bursts.
Switch off the engine and the injector should possibly be up approx 1" and take it out with a long nosed vice grips.
Tomorrow evening will tell whether he is right or wrong :fail or :thumb:

Some of the Mercedes mechanics tips are ok especially about the heat cycle method.

Leave the mix of diesel carb cleaner there a few days.

Keep topping up if its disappearing.

If your tip from the mechanic don't work............

You will more than likely need to extract the injector with a injector puller, this means the injector solenoid needs to be removed along with the internal sleeve so the puller can be threaded into the injector to pull it.

Please note you will have to refurbish or replace the injector you have taken apart and removed with the pulling tool.

Injector puller definition as below or similar type.

I was contemplating using such a pullers but only as a last resort.
I was going to use the slide hammer type first; the type that grips the injector underneath and saves disassembling the injector but decided to give my trusty Mercedes mechanic's instructions a go. He did say it never fails and saves a lot of time-wasting and damage.
Accordingly I left the solution seep away for approx 28 hours. I then removed fuse no 51-the fan fuse-and the injector clamp and started the engine.
I left it run until it reached 100C and I placed a block of timber over the injector in case it thought of exiting through the bonnet or of bending the pipe.
At 100 I brought the engine revs up to 4000 for a short time, two or three times. I then turned off the engine and I noticed that the injector was up by about half an inch. I used a long nosed vise grips and the injector came out without a problem. Job done.
