2003 C220CDI Fuel Tank 'empty' but 1/4 tank on gauge?

Ok, not strictly true, but i couldnt word it properly..

I have a 2003 C220CDI. When the car is 1/4 full of fuel, and with the trip computer registering 100 miles, the car runs out of fuel. When i fill it from this point it takes approx 40 litres to fill.

This suggests, or so i have been told, that one side of the 'saddle' shaped fuel tank is not draining.

Has anyone heard similar? Whats causing this? How do i correct it??

My old c280 used to do the same and they replaced fuel pump.
