2003 W211 E320 CDI
Hey everyone,I had a starting problem on the weekend which turned out to be 3 of my 6 injectors leaking. Today the local specialist replaced them and when I drove home noticed that there was an awful lot of smoke from the back and that the car was down on power.I specialist has it again now to look at it, but I'm wondering if any of you knowledgable fellows could give me an idea of what could be the problem. My thoughts are:1. Do you need to remap the engine when new injectors have been fitted?2. With no warning lights showing, can the car be in "limp home mode"3. Can it have defaulted to a "safe" engine map and therfore needs time to "relearn" it's fueling?Whatever the issue, I'm almost certain (as I can be as I'm no expert) that the fueling is messed up which is resulting in the smoke and lack of power.Any thoughts would be most welcome.RegardsNidjet

Update

OK, The garage has just called back and stated that the other 3 injectors which were not replaced, have a "high reading" 6.6 aparently (not sure what significance this has) and that they were going to take them off and put them on a machine for testing and calibration. Now It seems rather a strange tack to me, as the car was running perfectly before the starting issue occured, and all of a sudden it's smoking and gutless after injector replacement!

I'll keep you posted on progress but in the meantime, any thoughts?

Well it doesnt sound right if the car was ok before.. but in this sort of situation its difficult to say...

They should have checked all of the injectors before replacing just 3. If the other 3 were ok before they should be now.

It does sound odd I know, but the other 3 injectors passed the leak test which is why they didn't replace them.

I'm sure that the problem will be sorted eventually, it's just a pain in the proverbial to not have a car. God knows how much it's going to cost on top of the bill I have already paid.

I'll keep you all posted.

The leak off will not cause the smoking or lack of power.
The leak off just affects starting due to insufficient rail pressure.

Is it lumpy at idle? Misfire?

If so, sounds like the injected quantity is out, this will cause smoking, and can cause lack of power, but you will notice it not running right.

I know its daft, but smoking, lack of power. Have they checked all boost pipes for correct fit and no splits? Another possible angle to view.

Airmass is another one which could cause the symptoms you explain too.

Thank you for your thoughts, they cleaned out the "boost pressure" and are calibrating the other 3 injectors today. We'll see how it goes.

Hi

I have an A class diesel that had a continuous black smoke problem, and I had solenoid valve next to egr replaced. No probs now.
Loss of power, have you tried the fuel filter?

Ok got the car back yesterday afternoon. They refurbed the 3 old injectors, calibrated all 6 injectors and cleaned the boost pressure sensor in what sounds like an ultrasound bath. The car runs perfectly now with no smoke and all the power that was there before, it also starts first time.

Thank you to all who input to this thread.

Maybe think about changing where you have your car serviced.

As has been mentioned, high leak off injectors only affect starting. Your car ran fine before the injector change I presume? Sounds to me like they put the wrong part number injectors in it, which were not delivering the right amount of fuel.

Not familiar with the 320 engine, but I would also imagine that it is unlikely to have 3 injectors with high leak off at the same time. On the 4 pot engines one injector is all it takes to cause starting problems, so unless more than one failed at exactly the same time, it would be difficult to get to a multiple failured situation.

Maybe someone with 320 experience can comment on this?
