Having spoken to a few members about a meet in the middle and kicking ideas around on the "you cant please everyone" basis, here's a thought that came up for early 2004.

A road run starting in Lancashire, and crossing into Yorkshire, beginning at Charnock Richard services northbound on the M6 (approx 200 miles from both London and Glasgow) An 11-00am start with a 60 to 90 minute drive on the A59 and A65 to Harry Ramsdens for lunch, then continue on to York, arriving approx 2-30, 3-00 pm. I have my eye on a pub in York called The Millfield which is a family friendly Brewsters type pub where we can all pop bonnets and admire each others cars before enjoying an evening meal. It also has a Travel Inn alongside for those coming any great distance and wish to stay overnight. (£45 per room, single, double or family)

It's as near central as I can make it, but I understand it wont please everyone, it includes a road run over some wonderful country roads, A stop for Lunch is in there, and the finish venue is family friendly so kids would be welcome.

Before I put any effort into making sure the proposed venues are suitable, and that they would accept what is planned, or find alternatives, I'd like a few opinions please.

Enough numbers and I'll do all I can to make it happen, and by enough I'm talking a dozen cars minimum to make the effort worthwhile.

Sounds like a great idea, although I am only 30 mins from Charnock Richard ;)

Not too keen on a "Road Run" in the UK personally, but up for another GTG anytime!

I like the idea of a GTG but not the idea of driving a couple of hours to meet up and then drive for another hour or so in a convoy looking at the back of another Merc.

don't we need to get some sort of "consent" from the police if we organise a road run? I seem to remember that from organising events with other owners clubs that if more than a certain number of cars are involved in a pre-arranged event it is classed as a rally.

I may be wrong but it's worth checking out if only for the insurance side of things.

Not too keen on a "road run" either I am affraid.... I do too much bumper to bumper driving all week getting to work and back.

Besides which, from experience, driving in large numbers always ends up in chaos.

Just my thoughts.

Good idea
The people who do not want to do the whole run could meet along the way at say
Harry Ramsdens or at York. York makes a very good weekend away lots to do for the wife and kids

I knew there was some sort of restriction :)

a "trial" can be anything from an organised convoy, map following excercise, treasure hunt etc through to a full blown rally stage and as such may be worth looking into

from the road traffic act 1988 c, 52 section 13

13.—(1) A person who promotes or takes part in a competition or trial (other than a race or trial of speed) involving the use of motor vehicles on a public way is guilty of an offence unless the competition or trial—
(a) is authorised, and
(b) is conducted in accordance with any conditions imposed,
by or under regulations under this section.

(2) The Secretary of State may by regulations authorise, or provide for authorising, the holding of competitions or trials (other than races or trials of speed) involving the use of motor vehicles on public ways either—
(a) generally, or
(b) as regards any area, or as regards any class or description of competition or trial or any particular competition or trial,
subject to such conditions, including conditions requiring the payment of fees, as may be imposed by or under the regulations.

(3) Regulations under this section may—
(a) prescribe the procedure to be followed, and the particulars to be given, in connection with applications for authorisation under the regulations, and
(b) make different provision for different classes or descriptions of competition or trial.
(4) In this section "public way" means, in England and Wales, a public highway and, in Scotland, a public road.

another interesting point is that convoys "possibly" fall under the criminal justice act - I think any more than 6 vehicles makes it technically illegal to travel in such a manner.

At the end of the day without notifying the Police in advance of your intentions, route and number of vehicles taking part the participants and organisers are on dodgy ground.

Having both organised and taken part in this sort of thing with vintage commercial vehicles in the past, I'm aware that the authorities do need to be informed, but my experience is that they just want to know what is going on rather than take any action. I would be quite happy to liase with any police authorities to make sure they are ok with this happening. Same goes for the management at the proposed venues.
Although if any form of public liability insurance is required (and I will check)then it is a non starter.

I'm looking for a flexible fun day out that as many people as possible could attend. It's a road run, lunch, a GTG, an evening meal and an overnight stay, but it's pick'n'mix, you can choose to take part in it all or any part that suits.

Sounds like a great idea. Thanks for your efforts to date
EDIT**
Please dont do it in April though as I am on Jollys for the month :D

Yes good work mate. Don't get put off or dispondent by any negative comments, you will never please everyone.

I'm up for it if the date is right. :bannana: :bannana:

There are enough of us with Sat-Nav to make up smaller convoys if required.

I would be up for it, preferably with the meet up in York, sounds like a good day out for me and the other half.

Ray,

You've got my 100% support.

Only problem is I'd need to book a date fairly sharpishly due to work commitments.

This weekend I've got to work out all my holidays for the year (47 days up to Oct 31), and get them scheduled ASAP :(

Assuming of course I have a fully functioning gearbox (could pop to see Mr. Walker on the way).

Mr W Is going to the Skid Pan GTG and his Brother lives in Mortimer West End (South of Reading), so no need to visit, can being down anything you need. :D

Ray - Well done for coming up with a great idea - I think this sounds cool.

Don't take too much notice of the negative comments shown on here. If anyone wants to come they can and if its too much hassle for others then they have the option not to come.

I will be up for it anyway

When do you propose this to happen? Only other comment though - to choose dates carefully so as not to clash with big events like Le Mans and Goodwood.

sounds good, count me in. (good excuse for me to visit me ma and get some brownie points! :D )

Count me in for this one too - is so tough for me though living were I do:D :bannana: ie slap bang in the middle of it all and on the A59 almost:D

Like the idea of diff bits at diff times too as gives ppl the choice and flexibility to fit in where they can - modular - do all or bits:D
