Mercedes C220 CDI W204 (FL)
Hi All

I have been "trying" to research the tuning potential of these motors after getting mine a couple of months back. However, I feel I have alot of confusion in whats what with regarding these motors.

I have seen that they use the same block, turbo and other hardware to the C250 CDI's, I have also read that injectors are different etc. If they were the same and the C250 CDI's can be mapped to around the 250 figure then surely the 220's can be too?

What is the full story with this?

If injectors do need to be changed (220 to 250) what models will I be looking for as i understand the earlier gen's of injectors had a tendancy to fail?

Is the turbo a twin set up or single? Again conflicting everywhere I look.

DPF removal is this a worth while mod too whilst going with the remap?
(sorry only had petrols before) also whats the story with EGR removal, havent seen anyone on here blank these too?

summing up to get the best out of the motor with out going crazy:

- DPF Removal
- C250 CDI Injectors (Rail needed too?)
- Map

Also can anyone point me in the direction of reputable tuners in scotland or north east england if possible. I've only ever delt with RS tuning in leeds but they dont work on the Mercs :(

Sorry if some of the questions seem a bit Noob ish, just seems to be all over the info on this?

Also has anyone upgraded the intercooler to a C350 type or are these the same size again?

Cheers in advance

Ben

I've asked sort of the same question about my E220, not had a response yet. Looks like I've read exactly the same conflicting reports regarding singe, twin turbo too.

Currently in the same boat Benmc, would be good to get some info.

Same ie confused.....
(looking to buy next month - 4 door saloon, 2011-14, tenorite/magnetite with artico/leather. Have noticed that the 250 commands a premium over the 220's.)
but given ambiguity will only purchase a 250.

i can't help with any answers to your questions but why don't you contact one of the specialist companies on here for the answer ?

i have the 250 and i've had it mapped my understanding was you can do exactly the same with the 220 but as you say conflicting reports.

i thought the 200 had a single turbo and the 220/250 had the twin set up.

one last thing having my car mapped was by far the best thing to do the difference is amazing especially on the motorway which is where i do most of my miles.

okay people so I managed to get in touch with Anthony at GAD and he explained the following:

C220 is a twin turbo (I have facelift unsure pre 2011)

C220 and C250 are the same engine. However, injectors and second turbo in the C220 are downsized therefore being a limiting factor, hence why we cant get to the same power as the 250's mapped. I had a quick look around just for injectors and they were approx 370 each and God knows how much for the C250 turbo. Apart from this everything is the same.

Bear in mind aswell the injectors would have to be coded which would increase on the cost.

Remap would bring the 220 standard (no DPF and EGR removal) to around 210BHP from what I gather.

Seems like unless you want to pay out or can source the C250 turbo and injectors at a decent price were relatively stuck at the 210 mark.

Hope this helps anyone

Anthony if you see this and I have crossed wires please feel free to correct.

Thanks.

Essentially, brings the "enhanced ie tuned but not dpf/egr delete" 220 in line with (in fact just a little bit more bhp eg 5-8BHP) power output of a "standard" 250.

From what I can gather even the "enhanced" 220 is down on torque compared with the "standard" 250 of about 65Nm (eg 510 vs 580). Naturally, "tuners" numbers have to be taken sometimes with a pinch of salt (excluding the 3 outfits who post here).

I am opting to source a 250 as the initial extra outlay just about balances expenditure on tuning a 220 PLUS have the ability to enhance the 250 for power/torque.

Wouldn't it be simpler to buy a 350?

Do the part numbers for 220 and 250 injectors differ?

I'm reasonably sure a forum member checked this with MB and the injectors were the same part number suggesting there was no difference?

Can anyone with access actually check this?

It would make no sense for a manufacturer to introduce different parts when the same ones will do.

interesting, I hope it's the same for the E class 220. Might have t get in touch with GAD myself!

I'd need to check but thats what has come from GAD.

I also remeber the diesels from renault (i know different manufacturer) having limiting factors on injectors turbo and IC however running same blocks

Hi I just bought my race chip pro2 for my cdi c250 and makes a big difference gives a nice burst of power when I put the shoe in , and fuel consumption is not any better or worse it seems the same well worth the few hundred quid

If I have chassis numbers from 220 and 250 I can check the parts diffance and the price (work at merc main dealer and the south dealer for msl performance)
