I had a quick look at changing my air filter & MAS this morning as the parts arrived via mechanic housemate. (trade prices :bannana: ) I see the MAS is tucked up near the bulkhead, just under the airbox. Now I have a new filter to go in too, I was hoping to do this myself, if not the MAS too. I'm wondering how to get the airbox apart, as the screw heads seem to point down, leaving all but a few inches to get a screwdriver in there. I'm also wondering if they're gonna be special merc screws that i'll need a special merc screwdriver for? Or does the whole airbox come away somehow?

Cheers in advance....

I'll answer my own question if anyones interested.... :D

I found the whole airbox is clipped down the the engine, a quick tug got it off, and the air ducts pull off too. The airbox is held together by star drive screws, thankfully not special merc screws. The MAS has a pastic clip that goes around its girth, came of easy, a little trickier to put back. One thing that surprised me was that I need two new air filters for the greedy thing! I'll have to do it all over when I get the new through, just blew it clean for now.

Whole job took half an hour, and wasn't difficult. I'd say to anyone interested in doing it themselves to save an hours labour should definatly give it a go.

Thanks MacGreggor, well that was certainly worth the change wasn;t it

Next question :D is it only AMG's that have MAF's or does my lumpy old 96' C220 Diesel have one too - there is a degree of a lack of power in certain situations and I cannot believe the engine is that weak - or is it  anyone know please - nothing mentioned that I can see in the Haynes manual.

Got a 95 C180 and where the MAF should be just seems a different section of pipe with no cable so looks like it doesnt have one :D . Happy with that one thing that cant go wrong.

Yes, the MAF is used by the ECU, so your diesel will have one somewhere. Wether its the cause of your lack of power or not I dont know, probably best to get it hooked up to a diagnostic computer to find out for sure.

DOH
I've searched the forum but cant find the pictures somoene kindly put up recently of a mass air sensor (MAS). Can anyone help please?

I think I have found the MAS on my C220 D '96. Its right on top of the air tube from the air filter to the engine intake. I unclipped it and had a close look with a mag glass. Very sooty and dirty and actually the little bulb sensor is cracked. A new one needed I think.

Shall I get from dealers or can anyone here help please. Details from it are: VDO Germany, 809/19/4 000 542 2818 with PA66 and 7/96 also marked on it.

The sensor you have located is the IAT (intake air temperature) sensor and I doubt that will be damaged or responsible for your low power.

Your car doesn't have a MAF sensor.

You have a normally aspirated 2.2 diesel in a heavyish body. This isn't going to be a car to run at Santa Pod by any stretch of the imagination.

Thanks Dieselman - your correct of course, in every aspect, never mind eh. I keep harking back to my left hand drive 1.8 Mk1 Golf Gti - the original original hot hatch - nothing seems the same since :D

Having driven a Citroen BX16v and a Sirocco GTX I know what you mean.
