My 98 230k CLK has been trouble free for a good while, until this morning. I left home for work drove about half a mile to the main dual carriageway. As I accelerated to join the dual carriageway the gear change went a bit haywire, shifting up and down until it just went into neutral. I pulled over, reselected drive and started off again only for the same thing to happen. I got off the dual carriageway and made my way via the back streets. This was better but the gear changes felt clunky. I haven't had any issues with it until today and the car is used daily, nor do I have any warning lights showing. Any thoughts please ?

Possibly low on fluid. Do you have a dip stick? You need to get the level checked ASAP. Engine hot, switched off and in neutral. Also check the colour of the fluid. Should be a nice cheery red/pink. If black get it changed. Also if it's low have a look to see where it has gone. You may have a leak.

ATF dip sticks can be bought on e-bay for a couple of quid or get a local Indie to dip it.

Others will be along shortly with more knowledge of your car. Not sure here. But if it has been really wet watch out for water ingress into the selector electrics.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a dipstick, although I had the level checked a couple of months back. I got it to work, only about 5 miles, but as it was early morning and dark I didn't look underneath to see if it's been leaking. Il check it when I knock off this afternoon.
