Noticed small hole on the inside of the spare wheel bay Needless to say small hole turned into a big hole 
as it had been rusting from outside underneath the rear bumper by the time the loose rust was removed it was a sizeable hole
Remember you cant see it from the outside as the bumper covers it and you wont see it on the inside until it has penetrated all the way through .
Mine was like this on Both sides
The car is not worth a concours repair ) so in my case it was cleaned up both sides aluminium mesh contoured round on the inside and fibreglassed on the inside the outside was also fibreglassed and then undersealed I did a similar repair on the 124 and it lasted about 8 years
The repair has also substantially improved the recently increased road noise that i had yet to diagnose
