21mpg on W208 - whats wrong?

I have pretty short journey about 4 miles and get to about 14mpg as the car is just about warm - I can't get it any higher - when I had a Skoda 1.4 auto loaner when my arches were being done it got to about 15mpg no higher on the same route - on the motorway I get ish 28 - 29mpg on a longer run and easily 40+ in the Skoda. Your cars just not getting warmed up enough.

It make sense but I cant make my trip to work any longer :P I think I will make quick test on 40-50 miles trip and see what it will look like.

I've had a CLK 230 Kompressor since 2005 and have personally covered over 90,000 miles and spent what amounts to thousands keeping it running as Mercedes-Benz intended. Everything is working as it should and the car is regularly and expertly maintained.

My typical MPG over this time and mileage has been around 26. Whilst I don't thrash the car when cold, in all other cases I drive enthusiastically and enjoy the performance available. Your consumption figures are not a million miles away from mine.

On a long motorway run with the cruise set at 70 I once saw 34 MPG, so the car can be quite economical, but you have to accelerate gently and keep the revs relatively low (so the supercharger isn't working hard).

I suggest following the excellent advice above and attempt to get at least the rolling radius accurate for the wheels/tyres you have.

Fundamentally, finding performance and economy together is a tricky business, short of modern diseasels and lightweight stuff like Elises and Westfields. In my opinion, an 11 year old solidly built automatic like a CLK is going to struggle to be quick and not be thirsty.

I checked my wheels size after all those advises and I verifed size of my tyres. They are 225/40-18 - sorry to all of you. :( Ups...

Jason: The 230k is a 1.8 and not a super car and BMW's are no better.

OP: can you reset the trip counter and see what it delivers at 50mph on the motorway?

The 230K is not a 1.8 in 1999 model year. It is a 2.3:doh:

I did a round trip of 200 miles yesterday on my leisure trip to London.

The trip computer is a weirdo toy.

I started at 30.4 mpg with a range of 402 miles at Ipswich. It took 20 miles to warm up to reach 40 mpg and when I reached Thurrock I got the maximum of 46 mpg. At Temple on my way back, it started with 25mpg even at 24 degree ambient temperature. Stop and go at traffic lights at A13 I managed 38.8 mpg and the range dropped to 200 miles even though I covered only 90 miles.

Not sure the range 25 ~ 46.7 mpg from the start or an average over a few miles.:dk:

The engine temperature was 90 degree not sure whether it an optimum engine temperature or something I did to the coolant.

Sorry I said the wrong thing as the OP CLK is pre 1st March 2001, he got away with the £400 road fund in April 2011. As it a 1999 car, it a first generation super charged engine as my 2litre 2001 SLK. I was lucky to get 30mpg average, 25mpg starting from cold engine. Dont waste your time trying to get a better mpg. One thing I remember you have to change the two air valves a the back of the engine near the bulkhead which may be prone to clogging with dust if it has not been done before. Failing that you will get an engine light fault. Enjoy your car while it lasts instead of worrying about the mpg. If you can afford a Merc, surely you dont need to worry about the mpg.
