Hi I'm only getting 38mpg on a run and 24mpg max round town this don't seem great to me as the clk 220 is meant to great on diesel. What's everyone else's doing as a reference?

Cheeks guys

whats the engine temperature gauge read - if it has dropped from normal on a long run you may have a thermostat that has stuck open

Highest I've ever seen is 68.3mpg but that was really hard to get.
I left London yesterday morning on M25 to M40 at constant 60mph and was getting around 55mpg, by the time I reached the M6 my speed increased to 70mph and it dropped to 50mpg.

Further along the M6 & onto the M74, I was sitting between 80 & 90+mph and the average for the whole journey of 400 miles had dropped to 41mpg.

Around town, I never see more than 30mpg. I recently replaced the thermostat as the engine was not reaching it's ideal temperature and checking the dash figures against a brim to brim fill up shows I actually achieve 2 or 3 MPG more than shown on the dash. A light right foot is required to get these figures, if you accelerate hard all the time the figures are rubbish.

The average temp is around 80 which I believe to be normal I drive from London to Brighton and back everyday around 75mph however after stopping and starting round town average speed is 38mph and 38.3 mpg

Temperature is correct.

I don't have a 220 CDI so I have nothing to compare your experience with. I did drive one the other day from Lancaster to Preston (26 miles on a stone cold engine) and it was showing 41MPG on the dash read out at the end of the trip, average speed was around 60MPG as I came down the A Roads.

My 2.0 Petrol C Class gives me 39mpg on a motorway run.

I do Bridgnorth - Leicester everyday, its as good as a diesel in a straight line if you have a light foot

Petrol's excel on higher speed cruise type journeys as there is little requirement for additional torque and the throttle is open so less pumping losses.

However, on such a journey, a 200Cdi would produce mpg figures in the 50+mpg range, fairly readily.

You ought to investigate aerodynamic mods as that type of motoring would reveal real savings.

Hard to have a light foot in such a heavy car due for a remap I think

A remap won't help, you need to fit Aero mods... ;)

BTW. 80c is a bit cool, though a radiator grille block would help both aero and the temperature.

Your mpg figures are way too low, but then so is your average speed.

Hi i've a c220cdi manual and get 50mpg on average from a tank. Usually a bit less (but still late 40's) if around town and a bit more if on motorway (not much passes me either).

Once set off for a meeting early and plodded at about 60mph on the motorway and got about 65mpg on the gauge. Gauge on dash is pretty accurate on mine.

Regards Mark

Does you car have a DPF fitted, I suspect not. That may be the difference with the O/p's car.

Either you have have a car problem or poor use for economy, my 320 petrol CLK did 34.5 on a 1000 mile run to Le Mans, averaging 28.2 mixed but mostly local over 2300 miles. After 200,000 miles, too. Would think a diesel 220 should be better.

I agree with DM 80C is too low should be around 90C but the heavier your right foot the higher your consumption will be. I measure mine from tank to tank as the on-board gauge bluffs better than a poker player, average is 45mpg but the best has been 50 although I do have to say that it bores me to tears!

43mpg should be realistic! I mainly do 4 x 2mile trips per day on back roads which shouldn't be good for economy:doh: though over 4 years I get no less than 43. best was around 60mpg,,,but this was on a long trip in 'limp mode':thumb:

Think a lot of things contribute to the bad fuel consumption the main reason is probably my lead foot to get the car going but with a heavy car and a little engine I believe this is what has to be done to get it off the mark.

Might be worth having the injectors checked - these are being replaced routinely by main dealers during servicing and can have quite an impact on fuel efficiency.

Glasgow to London @85 mph with cruise control last night, display shows 40 mpg. For short journeys around town approx 34 mpg.

I think that is the problem. You can still drive a diesel fast, even off the line with a very light throttle if you let the engines torque do the work, very different from driving a petrol engine.
