hi

my r129 is possibly the worst car to drive in 1cm of snow (even in W mode :D ) and as everybody else been looking at getting a 2nd pair of rims and some winter tyres

been talking to my brother (who lives in holland) and he drives a porsche and has similar problems in the snow with summer tryres, and he turned up this christmas in France where we were staying for christmas in his porsche with winter tyres (michelin pilots) and he had no problem at all driving up hills with 5-10cm of snow (compacted or not)

he told me he always buys his tyres 2nd hand with still 5 or 6mm profile left on them for about €30 each

he says he basically puts on those tyres either on the first day of snow or just before and removes them again once all the snow has disappeared

does anyone else buys 2nd hand winter tyres ? and if so where? also what is best place for 2nd hand rims? i might try to see if the guys at pristine over the road from me have some but new they are £700 which is a bit too much for 2 or 3 weeks per year (with new michelin pilots that would be £1400)

i migh have to take a trip to holland to holland to get me a set of 2nd hand tyres unless someone knows of a place in the UK

cheers

Look on e ebay there was quite a few in the 16 inch rime size a week or so ago.
30 euros does sound cheap though.

i have a couple of mates who work at tire fitting outlets and it is amazing how many company car owners and well heeled private customers come in with one flat etc and end up changing all four tires, often with 5 or more mm left on the non damaged ones as well.

my current 285 30 19 rear bridgestone runflats cost me 70 for the pair, both had > 5mm when i got them, the 235 30 19 front matching ones were 30 for one with > 4mm and 20 for the other with about 3mm. all fitted and balanced as well!

i never use puncher repaired ones, but they are even cheeper.

i change my wheels like my shoes having brought the car with 17" avez and since trying 17" three piece amg 19" brabus then 18" carlsson three piece and now 19" slr. i am in the process of building a set from the original 17" agm three piece using the centers but with custom 19" hoops and barrels.
I would never buy new tyres for like 250 each, id just get a puncher straight away! but am lucky that my contacts save me 'good uns' when they crop up.

there are loads out there, if you aint got mates in the trade, ebay have loads, and i would imagine most are genuine but the usual ebay rules apply, you pays ur money and takes ur chances! i recon that in a few weeks there will be a glut of winter tyres removed and a lot will find there way to ebay, buy a set and put them up for next year.

i dont use winter tires so have never asked about them, but when i see andy later, i will enquire, and feed back, i dont drive the monster in the snow, hard enough to steer in the dry!

thanks that is useful info, always wondered where these 2nd hand tyres originated from (why would you sell tyres with 5mm left on them, now i know )

I've got a set of tyreless 4 x 16" 15 hole MB alloys from an R129. I was thinking of putting them on a 16v W201 but in the end decided to stay with the stock configuration.

£200 COC, near Reading.

I buy part worns too. Some people on ebay charge over the top. I have found a good place in manchester called "Nearly new tyres". The guy is really honest and stocks tyres for all cars and 4x4.

I have been lucky as well, last year he got a huge delivery of Continentals Conti Sport Contact that have never been fitted and sat in stock for three years. They can then only be sold as part worns, so with the stickers still on, four were fitted to my e240 235/40/18 £50 each.

For the 55, my rears lasted only six months (stll treas but very low), so what would be the point of getting brand new other than throwing money away. I rang the guy and asked to look out for the pirelli p zero rosso's I have on. Again he got them with as new tread still have the little rubbery bits sticking out and one puncture repair each, £80 for the two. I will be fitting them anytime soon. I have alread asked him to put two aside if he gets some really good ones in.

HAve a look on the internet for a local reatailer. Otherwise ebay is the easiest option, but after browsing recently some tyres sold on there for £80 are worthless with no tread.

Hi, whereabouts in Manchester is he.
Thanks Terry

I always thought the part worn tyres came from Germany where if they have a puncture they have to change the pair on the same axle so there is 1 good tyre for resale to uk.

my son used to work at a part worn tyre depot in manchester it is called tyre wise just of downing street(A6) before mancuinian way.all the tyres came from germany by the lorry loads, apparently the tyre wear limmit is much greater than ours.

Most of the better "used" tyres are imported from Germany, this is because they are very much more safwety conscious that drivers in other parts of Europe and tend to change tyres when the first 3 or 4 mm's of tread are used....after this, the tyres perforamnce reduces and it is a know fact that the last 3 or 4 mm's of tread wear more much more quickly than the first 3 or 4mm...so what is the real cost to them ? especially if they are getting a discount off the new tyres when "paret-exing" the old ones...

The puncture repaired ones though are the deal, if repaired well, as you can find 7-8mm tread tyres for next to nothing.

maybe they were punchered  :)
