I have a very minor problem that continues to niggle me! The speedo on my '78 SL has 'lost' it's centre 'cap', the small flat cone alloy trim piece that sits in the centre of the dial over the speedo needle. It's dropped imto the space between the speedo 'glass' and the perspex cover over the front of the instrument panel! Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the front portion of the instrument cluster, if so, how??

You will have to remove the entire cluster to gain access to the clips that hold the front cover in place. Many of the newer clusters are just pressed in to place and will come out with a firm push from behind, not sure if the older cars would be the same though.

The 107 cluster does come to bits. You have to remove the steering wheel then a couple of thin hooks at either side and it pulls out. There are long screws in from the back which sandwich the front face and the glass to the main body. That allows you to clean everything up and polish the glass (perspex) before re-assembly. Not complicated, just take your time and note where everything goes.
