4x4 - Why?

Ok, so why are "all wheel drive" cars called 4x4?

4 wheels on the vehicle and 4 driven wheels
Normally 4 wheels on vehicle and 2 wheels driven so would be 4x2

And it gets more complicated whenyou get into trucks with things like 6x4 and 6x6!

same as locos trucks etc 4x2 6x2 both std nowadays, 6x4 8x4 tippers, 4x4 6x6 and up usually military, with the odd gritter thrown but you dont see the old ones much nowadays.

Ive seen a 6x6x6 range rover but dont have a picture of it.

I guess there are probably some military vehicles with loads more driven axles/wheels but dont know of any specific ones myself.

I do have a 1x1 though sitting in my garage

I like the term 4 x 4. It's an accurate and descriptive term.
Much better than the names some forms of transport are known as.
We borrowed a six wheel device to tow pit gear around in the States and one of the Yanks referred to it as a 'Six wheel quad bike'
How wrong can you be in one name?
