5 Spd Paddle Shift

Hi, just recently gone from a 7 speed box with paddle shift to a 5 speed.

I'm pretty sure I could use the buttons on the steering wheel to shift in ANY gearbox mode on the 7 speed.

With the 5 speed in my CLK it seems I can only do this in Manual mode! In Sport or Comfort they do nothing, yet I can still shift down or up by hitting the shifter left or right.

Is this operation correct for the 5 speed or is there something wrong with mine?

I can use the paddles in any mode on mine, it is just that there seems to be less control - e.g. in comfort mode pulling the 'down' paddle seems to change down two gears.
I think that is deliberate to change down for the optimum gear to overtake, but I don't like it as sometimes I might want to change for a gear (not two) for engine braking on a long hill.
For me, the box is in C mode for normal, S mode for twisties/lots of ups and downs, and M for the occasional play.
