5 speed auto box dipstick - too long?

I got the 5 speed auto box measuring stick a while ago along with parts to do the ATF change, part number 140 589 15 21 00.

My query is that when I inserted it into the ATF tube to check current level of fluid the dipstick does not go all the way in. In fact there is a good 15 inches or so left and when withdrawn the plastic guage end is slightly bent indicating that it has reached all the way to a stop!

I expected the stick to go all the way like the engine stick and also for the end to not go to a 'dead end'

Can anyone confirm or otherwise their own experience with this please?

cheers, Ian

As far as I remember, when Jimmy used his dipstick to check my tranny oil after we had changed it, there was a fair bit sticking out, as you have described.

I'm just concerned about the accuracy  of the level on a fluid change - so best to ask - thanks Sym,

Just stick the dipstick in until you feel it hit the bottom of the transmission sump. Take the reading. Voilla.

The stick is intentionally too long as it is for different vehicles and it is not to be left in when driving.

cheers Dieselman, makes better sense now

Hi Grasmere - do you still have the part numbers for the filter and the seal by any chance?

Transm Filter: MA140 277 0095 £4.48
Gasket: MA140 271 00 80 £ 4.34
Gearbox Oil 1LT: MA001 989 21 03/10 £7.19 (8 Litres needed, well, about 7.5 to be more accurate)
