Hello all

I decided it was about time i changed the supercharger oil on my S55k.

Taking the 5mm allen screw out was not that much of a problem, and neither was getting the old fluid out.

But getting the damn screw to go back in is proving to be rather impossible. Because of its location i cant get the screw to go straight back into the hole and so it wont catch the thread.

Have dried a bendy extension bit, a wobbly bit and even a magnetic bit, but to no joy.

Is there a certain way to get it to line up, or is there a special tool for this?

Thanks.

When I did mine, it was with a long ball end Allen key and lots and lots patience! It took about 10 tries frequently to get it in...

This has been a lot more than 10 tries, as a matter of fact if i got it in 10 tries id be a very happy man. Have spent about 3 hours on it now and it still wont go in.

Was thinking bout how easy/hard it is to remove the supercharger pulley to get it to go in?
I know this may seem slightly OTT for the job at hand but i really dont want to end up cross-threading the screw either and theres only so many times you can find it after dropping it.

If you havent done already Stuff a bit of newspaper under the fill hole so it doesn't fall to the ground.

You can always jack up th whole engine a bit using a bit of wood and a hydraulic jack.... Be very careful though!

Can you cut down a ball end allen key so that it slots in between without to much of an angle, if you use the piece you cut off and use some tape or wire you can make a T or Cross shape to give leverage.

If not try lifting the engine as suggested above as the magnetic part of the pulley requires a special tool to remove, if all else fails you may need to pull the supercharger itself.

Didn't know that there is supercharger oil ...

how often does it need changing?

I don't think there is a recommended change by MB, I changed mine as I had the supercharger off so it was a 5 min job and the oil is pretty cheap.

I think I paid £30 and it was enough for both Don and mine as well as some left over.

I understand what your saying, but there just doesnt seem to be enough space in there to get anything that small in and then try and tighten it up aswell.

Im not too sure what lifting the engine is going to achieve though, as the supercharger puller will come up with it and still be in the way.

Rollox!!!

My mechanic mate tried to have a go and despite all the tissues stuffed under there he managed to drop it infront of the tissues, but just behhind the pulley. Now its nowhere to be seen.

Just been to the dealers and they say you cannot get the screw by itself, but im sure you can. Does anyone have a part number for it please?

Lol are they going to try to sell you a complete S/C?

Tony.

There is no recommendations on doing this, im pretty sure MB class it as a lifetime thing.

But the worrying thing here is that despite my best efforts (and even jacking the car up from one side) i only managed to get about 50ml out . . . . and then managed to get about 150ml back in

So it was down by about a third. I would personally recommend about the 40k mark, along with your gearbox and rear diff oils. They're not very expensive and its cheap insurance against something going bang.

Savman - how much did you manage to get back in, is 150ml about right or does that seem too little aswell? I kept putting it in until it started coming out of the hole.

Ok, iv just found this:-

Mercedes Drain Fill Plug M24 x 1.5 x 12 mm A1869970032

Can anyone with an EPC maybe check and confirm please?

Thanks.

Theres always plenty of screws on ebay:D yes I speak from experience dropped mine on the 230k

Not sure on this charger but the one on my 230k took a lot more than 150 ml. IIRC I think it was a 1 litre can and it took maybe just over a third of it. Did you suck the old oil out with syringe and tubing?

I drained mine completely as the supercharger was off, did not measure what came out but it used less than a 1/3rd of the can which is a US quart so less than 300ml I would guess closer to 250-275mm.

Yeah sucked it out with a syringe and tube, and from what i had read on other threads and forums on the subject i was only expecting to take less than half of what i put in, but i just thought 50ml was way way too less. I even jacked the drivers side rear up to get the fluid to come to the drain hole.

I think the M24 part gives it away that would make it about 25mm in diameter.

SavMan is correct the tin is a US quart so not a litre so 300ml would be about right :thumb:
