HI guys
I am in a bit of a dilemma, my dash is saying that i need to add 2 ltrs of oil, problem is that i have not been very far (1200 miles) i had the garage i use check for any oil leaks and they can't find anything and there isn't any smoke from the exhaust, well not 2 ltrs worth if there is any, no oil marks on the drive either.

Yesterday I added a ltr of oil and it still wants 2 ltrs, i added another ltr and it still says it wants another, so today i went to Machine Mart for a dipstick and its a special order (7 days) nobody else keeps them i stock locally.

I did read on here somewhere that somebody gave measurements and the use of curtain wire to check the level manually, but i cant find it again.

I don't want to drive it just in case its overfilled and the level is lying to me, trouble is i am off to Austria on Wednesday, so if anybody can help it would be very much appreciated.

All the best
Ian

buy a manual dipstick, then check again, if it is dropping you defo have a leak,

oil cooler under the wheel arch is what leaked on mine.

Tried to get one today, but 7 day for delivery, i need to sort very soon as i am off on Wednesday on my road trip.

Thanks, yes it would be, but delivery being the 8th August and i will be in Austria by then, hopefully.

There is a 24 hour delivery option for 3.95.

Drop him a line now and tell him it's urgent. Most decent people on Ebay are happy to help in my experience.

pop into a dealer or an indie, im sure they will quickly check the level for you

Do not assume the oil level sensor is always right and even when it is which way round you park on a non level surface can give remarkably different readings!

I had two sensors replaced (both under warranty happily) and I do not trust the third.

A curse on the bean counter who decided to shed the dipstick.

Spoke to the local indie today, he said i had to drive the car to get it nice and hot and then recheck and now it needs 1.5ltrs last night it only needed 1 ltr, ask him if he had a dipstick to double check and he said he wouldn't use one as they are not reliable

I give up on this, how do you know if the sender is inaccurate :dk:

By a DIY service I guess.

I put 8 litres (I can always top up) in after I drained the oil and the dash reading gave me aprox 8 litres.

You need to make sure the car is on a level surface.

8.5 litres fill level including filter. I think you are burning oil
You could drain and refill? At least it can be measured correctly going forward

I believe there is a way of checking the oil level very accurately through the diagnostic mode.
Not sure of the procedure bit suggest having a word with Eurocharged / MSL

Just don't forget to take the car out of diagnostic mode when your finished.

Good luck

Interesting.

How often, if ever, is the electronic sensor calibrated?

Yes, there's away to do it with curtain wire (well, curtain spring anyway). My dipstick just arrived from the States, and I'm about to do the oil change. The recommended technique is to check it with the oil warmed up, then left to stand, engine off, for five minutes. I'll post tomorrow the length in mm from the lip of the dipstick tube to the maximum and minimum marks.

make sure the car is perfectly level too. Petrol station forecourt is a good place.

Before the car left the factory, certainly; after that, who knows? Is a check on the sensor with the calibration dipstick part of any of the service schedules?

Thanks, Olly, but none of the petrol stations I use seem to have dead level forecourts. My drive is close to it, though, and I use my local Homebase car park for a final check - that's pretty much perfectly level.
