C250cdi W204 facelift sport man
Early morning run this week I had time on my hands so just for fun I wanted to see what efficiency levels were achievable from a C250cdi BE manual. Pleased to report that I managed to squeeze 80 MPG by taking it gently, mainly on motorway at a steady 50-55ish plus some A roads. I don't normally drive so slowly but even at more normal speeds I'm getting pretty good results. I'd be nterested to see whether an auto box could deliver something similar.

Excellent. This post should be referenced each time a C250CDI owner complains about poor fuel efficiency in their car.

Agree with Will, the frugality of cars is as much about the person driving as the actual car itself; I regularly exceeded mpg figures in my numerous cars achieved by others...

My daughter regularly manages 75 mpg in her auto Smart Fourtwo CDI over mostly back roads and still grumbles about the cost of diesel!

Wow, that is seriously good going.

Can I ask whether that was in one direction?

The most I have got in my C220CDi BE Manual has been about 65.5mpg, that was on a 156 mile trip. Average speed 50mph. I remember being excited about the 1023 miles showing on the range meter at one point :) ......that journey did include some stop start on the M25 around Heathrow, so could have been better, but no where near 80mpg.

As a matter of interest, how are the latest manuals to drive? I have never really thought of an MB manual.

.
Cheers guys and yes it was in one direction - I didn't feather the throttle on the return but still hit around 65mpg. My running average from new over 13k miles is showing at 58.9 on the OBC which is somewhat optimistic, now that the engine has loosened up a bit my running average over last 10 brim-to-brims is just over 56. Putting it another way, I'm getting about 750miles from a 60l tankful so am well pleased with that.

I get about 450 mile out of my 82 litre tank in the D3...:o

Some impressive figures there. Best I have ever had is just over 77mpg from my 220CDI.

What is the symbol on the dash that looks like a coffee?

Despite official figures, I'm convinced that the manual box is a little more efficient so I'm impressed that you've managed 77. As for the symbol, I think it's the attention assist feature which says 'time for a caffine shot' if it notices the driver dropping off. No doubt this is a great safety feature but mine seems a bit sensitive - I've had it beeping at me a couple of times on a straight motorway stretch when I've been fully awake.

Really good,
Wouldn't belive on word but pic is a proof enough
Well done, it looks like 60 miles can be done on 3ltr of diesel, that is a miracle.

Very impressive!

But...can I just ask....since you would appear to drive with fuel efficiency being the most important factor, why did you choose the 250??

Personally I am very pleased with the performance:economy offered by mine but I know that there is no way on earth that I will ever see 80mpg, let alone 65!!!!

This is highly impressive and proof that the newer generation of engines are better on fuel. I too better most peoples figures but there's no bettering that.

Not really the most important factor and I'm no hypermiler but do get a kick out of efficiency, not just fuel but tyres and brakes too. That said, I do also use the right foot occasionally and the 250 had noticibly more poke under heavy throttle than the 220 when I test drove them both.

Chances are that in real world driving the 250 will be more economical than the 200.

...possibly.....but then, personally, I wouldn't class someone getting 56mpg average out of a 250 as being your average "real world driver"...!!!

(Frugal - please don't interpret this as "having a go" at you, because I'm most definitely not :thumb: )

I've covered a little over 12,000 miles in our Auto 220cdi BE.

You can see the real world numbers below as per fuelly. I'm not doing the most economical driving at all, mostly short runs of stop start so I'm pretty happy with the real world numbers.

What isn't so good is the OBC reading which is gradually getting more divorced from reality. It's now reading 20% more than reality and sometimes even more than that. So I generally take what the dashboard says with a pinch of salt.

Agree it's disappointing that OBC can't be more accurate. Mine is running about 8% optimistic which isn't too bad but maybe I'd much rather have it on the nose - a touch of OCD perhaps. Does anyone know whether there is any adjustment possible?

Wow - dusty interior!

I keep a microfibre cloth in the front bin of my seat. Won't save fuel but will save me from sneezing and maybe accidentally jabbing the throttle so may be I do save fuel...
