80 MPG from C250cdi

...possibly.....but then, personally, I wouldn't class someone getting 56mpg average out of a 250 as being your average "real world driver"...!!!

(Frugal - please don't interpret this as "having a go" at you, because I'm most definitely not :thumb: )

I guess it depends on your driving style. The kind of person who gets less than 50k out a set of brake pads etc isnt going to get those mileages as an average , but driving respectfully of the car and the odd bit of performance i wouldnt imagine 56 is too pie in the sky.

Anticipation and driving to the conditions and not using the brake pedal is the key. Every time that pedal is pushed the mpg disappears.

Also very much depends on the roads/environment where miles are covered. I'd say that at least 70% of my driving is fairly short journeys, around towns and the Welsh Valleys, with very little motorway cruising. As a result, if I get an average around 40mpg then I'm pretty happy!

I would class this sort of use as being "real-world" for a lot of people...

Not in the same league I know, but even old petrol cars can give good results. This is what my 1999 CLK 230k coupe achieved on a run back home from St Mawes in Cornwall. Quite a long way along tiny Cornish lanes before being able to cruise on dual carriageways and then motorways. And this wasn't a motorway dawdle at 50mph as you can see from the average.

As a matter of interest, how are the latest manuals to drive? I have never really thought of an MB manual.

I have never appreciated the beefits of an auto box and unless the flappy paddle system is considerably improved, I'll probably remain with the stick shift. This is my second manual MB (previously W202 C200 petro) and despite hearling all the criticism and adverse comparison with BMW over the last 10-15, I find this one, while not fantastic, really is pretty good. Reasonably precise and fairly short travel on the gearstick, clutch could be a bit lighter but I've no real complaints.
