Hi,

Firstly i'm new to this great website and would like to say that the people and information on the site look to be excellent!!

So, i have recently bought an 1996 SL600. The car is very very tidy and i think is a hell of a car for the money. Having done a few miles in it now and got used to it i have noticed a couple of times that following some hard driving and heavy right footing of the car if i pull up and return the gear selector to the Park position that the engine rev's are surging between around 600 & 1500 rpm...

I have only noticed this a couple of times. If i turn the car off and then strike back up again the idle is back to normal... Also this does not seem to happen if i do some steady driving for a few miles after hard driving...

Has anyone come across this problem before or can anyone give any guidance on this? Is this something i'm not doing right?? :dk:

Any help, suggestions and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben and welcome to the forum.I can`t help with your problem but can we see some pictures of the car please

Thanks, you certainly can... Still finding my way around the site, whats the best way of posting pics?

Don`t know about the rest but I have an album on Photobucket and I paste my pictures from there

Managed to work out the attaching Pics. Well we'll see if this works first. Heres hoping...

That`s lovely, not many facelift SL600s around :rock: You`ll need some AMGs to match the bodykit
You might like to cover your nr plates though

The Nr plates are from the previous owner mate, not been on the car for a good few months now. Thanks though.

I knew this was the facelift and also that the number of SL600's produced in general was pretty low. Been looking for a long time for one and this one just hit the spot when i saw it. Never seen an SL600 Facelift before so the heart skipped a beat when i saw it advertised...

What do you drive yourself D w124?

I have the same symptoms with a CL420, with the added pleasure of the engine cutting out intermittently.
If I get to the bottom of it I'll pass on the info but it seems like a difficult one to tackle :(

Hi CL420-ROB,

If we don't get anything come back over the forum then i will call round at my local Merc Garage and see if i can pick there brains about it.... Got to be cheeky but if they prove helpful the they will more than likely get the work to do!

hagarfriend,

Thanks, i'm certainly happy with it. If you can find one then i think now is the time to be buying as they are not the sort of car 'normal' people want due to the engine size and they are cheap as chips for what you are getting. With the recession ongoing and the fact that they are now old enough to qualify for classic car insurance, combine this with the price you can get one for should you be able to find a good one I recon you will be onto a winner.

Suerly they can't come down in price much more can they? I personally think they will soon become a real classic and very sort after by the Car Enthusiasts in the Classic Car scene. I'm hoping this will become a good investment in years to come :)

CL420-ROB,

Sorry to hear that you have the same problem but slightly worse then mine at present by the sounds of it... It does give me a little more confidence in finding the solution knowing that someone else has the same problem.

Just a quick thought to bounce of you knowlegable bunch...

Could this be a problem with the Mass Air Flow Sensor or EGR Valve??

Found an article that a Merc 300e had similar symptoms and this was suggested...

Don`t know if that would be the case for your cars but a 300e does not have a maf

Hi Ben and welcome from another SL600 owner! It could be a MAF problem but don't forget you have two of them, one for each bank so trying to eliminate it from your enquiries is going to prove a little more difficult than a car with only one.

If I remember correctly a MAF problem won't show up on a diagnostic machine either....

Hi Edz...

Thanks for the welcome, nice looking car you have there. Lovely motors aren't they.

Thanks for you input into this query, i had a feeling that it may be a little tricky with the merc... I've drove it down to London this morning and had no problems with it what so ever so it's not a massive issue to be honest.

How do you find SL600 Ownership? Don't see many of them around these days...

The first thing you need to do is to get it plugged in. The MAF values are simple to read on Star. I would suspect the MAFs to be faulty too BTW

600 ownership is fine as long as you don't use it as an every day car, which I don't. I had to spend out a lot of money on mine to start with to remedy an oil leak from the heads and I have an ADS and ASR problem to sort out too but nothing that stops me from enjoying all 394 of those glorious horses!

I would say MAF too, but I wasn't sure because I don't know if that year SL600 had one :)
