96' SL600 Engine Idle...

Lovely car! p s they have 2 MAFs and 2 THROTTLE BODIES !There is a problem with cars of that age with big v8 or V12 engines "cooking" their wiring or throttle body circuitry due to excessive under bonnet temperatures.

Rewiring the Electronic Throttle Actuator in a W140 Mercedes

pps Now I have frightened you to death it could just be the throttle plate housing throats need a bit of a clean with solvent or new MAF elements :thumb:

I thought the wiring issue was only up to 1994 for some reason.

The main issue with the biodegradable insulation lasted into 95 at least AFAIK but exactly when the insulation material improved I am not sure. However while the newer insulation is much superior its not entirely immune from heat degredation- no plastic is immune from plasticizer loss over time and this is accelerated by heat. Closer to engine=shorter life

Don't think the facelift SLs had the wiring problem.
Probably MAFs or O2 sensor but get someone to read the codes before buying parts.

Gent's,

Many many thanks for all your replies!! :thumb: This little niggle is not causing me any problems really, i'm just taking it steady when on the home run / last few miles and all is fine with it. Not that it's getting thrashed about constantly but the urge to unleash the 394 horses gets the better of me at times when sitting behind suday drivers or yobbo's in Modified 1.1's - 1.6's :D

With this in mind can anyone see any great issue's with me leaving getting it plugged in at a Merc Dealership until a littel later in the year when my bank account has recouped a little following the purchase of the car?

If there are any great issue's then it wouldn't be a problem getting it seen to sooner rather than later just like to have a nice comfort blanket in the bank if you know what i mean...

It won't do it any harm....

Take it to an Indie unless you want to get fleeced :)

I take it an Indie is an Independant Mercedes Specialist??

Prior to the purchase of the car i was in touch with Mercedes out at Lincoln and they seemed to be very helpful, i tapped them up to find out what labour costs would be and they have quoted me £32.50/hr... This seems reasonable to me and they are one of the mentioned Mercedes Garages in the little Dealership Locator book supplied with the car when new...

yes, Independent MB garage.

Wow, I'd get that in writing if i were you, £32.50/hr is cheaper than an Indie...

Looks like Lincoln MB are going to be very very busy:)

I think they missed a 0 off somewhere.

Some main dealers will give a big discount for older cars. At M-B Guildford (Tony Purslow) I get 40% off labour plus 10% off parts, plus free MOTs etc. They always seem genuinely pleased to have my SL in, and have never pushed to do extra work.

Yeah, that's still the best part of £60/hr, not £32.50!

Sorry Gents, just checked my e-mails again and this price of £32.50 was for the Indie just round the corner from Lincoln Merc. Also had an e-mail from Lincoln Merc who's rates are £75 per hr...

I must take more care with my reading! Or remembering my glasses may also help!!

BTB500,

Sounds like your on a reasonable deal with your Local Dealership, I am still going around and probing for the best deal in light of my recent ****-up with the Indie and Lincoln Merc...

The wheels on your 500 are lovely!! I have been thinking that a nice set of AMG's would be one of the few things i would like to change with my SL600. Are they Original AMG's on yours?? Any ideas on where i can be keeping an eye out for a set?

Yup as Peter said they are staggered 18" AMG I 2-piece. I was on the lookout for a secondhand set for some time without any joy, I got them from Alloy Wheels Direct (as above) in the end - excellent people to deal with.

Re. servicing, my last one ("A") at M-B Guildford was £292 all-in (and I forgot to supply the oil, which would have lopped £117 off that!).

Previous one ("Major") was £411, that included replacing the flexible brake hoses (and obviously drain/replace brake fluid).

Hourly rate isn't given on the invoices, but I don't regard the above as excessive. Particularly as free MOTs are included, they gave it a free aircon service a couple of years ago as well.

Well your wheels certainly do look superb! Very nice looking motor indeed.

With regargs to the servicing i 100% agree with you, the prices you quoted don't seem excessive at all. The SL i have just aquired has had all but one service since new carried out at mercedes which was a big plus point for me. I am certainly looking at keeping this up as i would hope that if i ever come to part with it this would pay dividens with the potential buyers and re-sale value later in life. Not that i plan in getting rid of it any time soon....

I will have a look at the link posted above and see how much many pennies i need to get saved before investing in a set of AMG's!!

You can find them used for a lot less

Aka$h might be able to help.

Good luck with finding some nice wheels! I do think a staggered setup looks good on the R129 ... fills the arches nicely.

I got mine 3 years ago, Don't think Alloy Wheels Direct have them any more.

Grab a copy of the May 'Mercedes Enthusiast' magazine. I was browsing in WH Smith today and saw a set of 18" 2-piece like mine for sale for only £400 in the ads at the back. They were in Scotland IIRC, but still cheap after arranging carriage. Think they included tyres too.
