A bit of an impulse buy really

Nice looking car you have there, hope that white stuff clears soon so that you can enjoy it properly.

A useless fact about the R129.......

The R129 came to public attention in 1991 when Diana, Princess of Wales sold her Jaguar XJS to lease a J-reg metallic-red 500SL and became the first member of the royal family to use a foreign car. This was not without controversy as it sparked a media storm as it questioned whether a member of a British royalty should drive foreign cars. Media pressure eventually forced her to return the car to Mercedes-Benz in 1992, with whom it now resides in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

I got a pic of Diana's car when I was there:

I had a 406 V6 saloon, which would blast off all the Chav cars, it was great & would pass anything but a petrol pump! (3 litre engine):D:D

Yes, it's all true about the 406 coupe. French engineering, italian build (actually built by Pinninfarina as well as the body design, the rest of the car being a Parisian taxi), but the best thing was that even after many years ownership I still had to refer to it as the 406 coupe because I never could remember how to spell Pergeot, Purgeot, or whatever it is.

Is that hideous greenhouse on wheels in the background a PopeMobile?

SL 320 with a straight six M103 engine and electronic 5 speed auto. Been reading up on the engine and am glad l bought the car on impulse otherwise l'd of had to open the bonnet to check head gaskets etc.

Sorry to be pedantic , but a 320 is a 24 valve engine and therefore an M104 ; the M103 is the 12 valve engine and came in displacements of 2.6 and 3.0 litres . Just to confuse things , there was also a 24 valve variant of the 3.0 engine , which was the first version of the M104 . Oh , and there were also 2.8 litre M104's , as well as larger displacements converted by the likes of AMG .

Nice 190SL , by the way .

Thats a lovely looking r129, and a fine impulse buy by any measure. Tourmaline green looks great on those, and a straight 6 is always a good choice for an engine. Far less vulgar than a V8.

Don't worry about the Princess whinging jessie connection. It could be worse, I have a w140 and she died in the back in one of those. Strangely MB world don't have that car on display?

Lol millo, yes, very strange that! Very nice car you have their Lorne and your brothers' too.

I saw that particular SL in real life one day when it's lady owner let me into the traffic on the Kings Road in Chelsea with a lovely smile. She really was the 'peoples princess' in my mind.

It is. I didn't bother taking a proper picture of that though :D
