A-Class 140 Problem?

Hi,

My first post on here as i am looking for some advice on a problem that i might have with my A Class (99).

I mechanic has had a look at our car and has advised us to get rid as quickly as possible.

Firstly the Chasis is starting to rust, Is this a common problem?

and more seriously, he noticed that that the inside part of the tyre of the passenger side had worn dangerously thin, the last quarter inch of the tyre width is tread bare. The tyre is only 4 months old!

This is the second tyre that we have to put on this side, the first had a blow out again due unven wear.

He has summerised that it may have been involved in an accident that has bent something.

The wheel on looking at appeared to be angled from top to bottom. Maybe due to the uneven wear?

So i have fitted to the new spare tyre but on applying the breaking there is a noise that has appears to come from the tyre/ breaks.

This happened when the last tyre was fitted but also new brakes, not having a great car knowledge i just thought i was the breaks bedding in but disspeared after 2 weeks.

Ive had the car 8months and on reading have found they have had problems with steering assembly and suspension.

Do some of these problems sound familar? Any advice greatfully recieved, expected cost of repairs ( If any) or do i take the guys advice as part ex it in and start again.

thanks

Hi and welcome.

Are you talking about a front or rear tyre. If it's rear then it will be due to the rear trailing arm bushes being worn out, common problem on early cars and they were modified. If it's the front then there is probably a bent strut.

Replacement parts and a 4 wheel alignment should sort this out.

As far as chassis corrosion what does he mean, the car body or the subframe? There is no chassis.

Hi thanks for your reply.

Its the front passenger. What would be the expected cost of these repairs?

Its the the sub frame, sorry lacking on car knowledge.

Reading other posts, i am no worried about the steering coluom as it has a knock and not really thought anything off it. Is this something thats needs adressing ASAP? and whats the cost involved with this?

thanks again

All subframes show rust as the paint used to cover them isn't very good, but it's unlikely to rust through.
Just paint and rustproof it.

It sounds as though your car has either worn out track control arm bushes or the macphereson strut is bent.

See this diagram.

Probably item 20 or 23 is worn out.
Shouldn't be too costly to get sorted.

The steering knock may be connected as it may be the bushes moving when steering.
