A close shave

Got a photo of myself driving 41 in a 30 so after pooping myself that 1- my clean license would besmirched and 2- my insurance would go up considerably I did the speed course. Most boring time of my life and was actually asked if I wanted to leave at half time due to me taking zero interest in it but that’s by the by. When my insurance renewal came through and I did the usual trawl through the comparison sites and entered my details twice, once as if I had 3 speeding points and once without and the difference in prices was 7 quid a year.

I treated it as a refresher course and actually learnt things. Attitude has a lot to do with it IMHO

I've been on said course here in Northern Ireland, the tell you that if you do not participate, you will fail the course, and therefore receive the points on your license.

The missing word - awareness......

Only another 3 years until you can do another one.

Was told the same so had to stay.
Believe me I have no problem with these courses,I really don’t, but will not be talked at like a child.

Maybe. But have been driving and riding bikes for close on 30 years, have a spotless license and am usually very very aware of my surroundings and speed limits but just got caught out on a small country lane in mid wales where the 50mph speed limit dropped to 30 for 200 yards and the lollipops on either side of the road were in overgrown hedgerow which you couldn’t see until they were level with the car.

I did but, as expected, it was an unrewarded effort.
You can't be disappointed, then.

I do appreciate the effort and, in particular, the fact that you had to string more than half a dozen words together to provide some semblance of coherence.

It was a copy and paste Del.

If that is the case you should photograph the obscured signage and send it back with a note rejecting the penalty notice : the signs being obscured are the same as white or yellow lines on the road being worn away , having gaps or missing their termination lines : they do not meet the required standard and if the matter went to court the prosecution would fail .

Do you have any legal training?

Is this not why Australia introduced a 'Hooning' law. Instead of having to prove vehicle control, driving without due care and attention, excessive wheelspin/acceleration etc.

You just get bust for being a 'Hoon' , a fine and demerit points. IIR Lewis Hamilton got done for it while doing burnouts on the road in his AMG during the Australian F1GP weekend a few years back.

Killjoys ! :p
That raises another question.

When someone is convicted of a traffic offence somewhere other than your country of residence, all the country you are visiting can do is to fine you ( although I think there is some reciprocal agreement within Europe ) , but I’m not sure Australia could impose points on Lewis UK licence , any more than the Scottish court here could impose points on the licence of an American I knew who was caught speeding here .

Of course if serious enough they can still jail the offender ..

They can impound your car in France.

Or bike. September 2017 I was running down to see my brother in the south of France. Last leg to his place was Corniche des Cevennes. Fantastic road so I pressed on with hot tyres. Coming in to a village I hauled it down then saw blue light reflections in my mirror.
Pulled over and put it on the stand. Helmet off. Flick pulls in. Proper heavy Gendarmerie not local Plod. His sidekick checks the bike while we eyeball each other.
"Monsieur?" I said.
"Hmmmm" he said.
"Je suis desolee Monsieur" I said
"Hmmmmm" he said.
"Desolee" I said.
"Speak French?" he said
"Petit peu M'sieur"
"OK we'll speak English"
"Tres bon M'sieur".
"What was the speed limit on that road?"
After deciding not to to play the English dickhead:
"90kmh M'sieur"
"And your speed was?"
"Gagging noises."
"I shall tell you. Your speed was145kmh!"
"Desolee M'sieur. Absolument desolee."
Fearing my bike was heading for the crusher.......
"OK M'sieur. If I ever catch you again, I shall take your motorcycle and you will have to walk back to England."
"Merci M'sieur."
Sometimes it pays to respect authority.

Sometimes? Pretty much always, I think, particularly in relation to road traffic offences where the copper has discretion.

Anyone driving in UK legally solely with a foreign license & can get points allocated to a UK driver number created to reflect their UK driving offence history, (linked to Police National Computer). Technically if they go on to acquire 12 points within 3 years they could be court disqualified from further driving in UK.

I said 'IIR' Lewis Hamilton got 'done' Hooning , I did not say he got any kind of fine or any point on his license as that would not be possible. I should know , I have been caught speeding in Australia (and a few other countries !) with zero effect on my UK licence. I have had speeding fines in the EU , Holland & Denmark with no points on my license . I do know there is some kind of reciprocal agreement in place with the EU regarding driving offences, but whatever I did maybe was before that was ratified or not a serious enough , No idea.

PS. you say " ...all the country you are visiting can do is fine you..."

Or they could throw you in the back of a pick up truck with a cage on it drive around with you in the back until their night shift ended , chuck you in a cell and let you out the next day and tell you to find your own way back...... so you are correct, you can be jailed ;)

I don't recommend a Saudi traffic lock up. The insect population seem to have a liking for European blood.
