Pedestrians, eh?

As I was exiting a roundabout, I spotted a pedestrian about to step off the kerb. Mindful of the new Highway Code, I stopped my car, just as he leapt back onto the kerb. I remained stationary, and beckoned him across.

My reward? A mouthful of abuse. "We had two legs before we had four wheels, you ......"

Lovely!
He'd obviously left his bike at home !

I drive wagons for a living and the amount of pepole that just walk out totally oblivious that 40 tonnes is barrling towards them is scary !
I dont know if they dont know or don't care but 40 tonne takes quite a lot to stop from 40 mph and several times I've had to put other road users in danger by evasive maneuvers to avoid pedestrians that could have waited 5 seconds for me to pass then cross safely.
The new rules are dam right dangerous and sooner or later someone is going to get killed thinking " I'm in the right he can stop" when the vehicle is unable to stop.

That sounds to me like pedestrians who are misunderstanding the rules. They only have priority at junctions, where vehicles would have to slow considerably or stop anyway.

The guy was a pillock.
But more cars should stop to let pedestrians cross.

Sometimes a pedestrian there is a roundabout we must cross. Of course the cars slow, a little. But if I don't take the plunge we can stand there for an age as the continuous train passes. It may be raining, but still no thought for the pedestrian. A car would lose maybe 10 seconds by being considerate.

Now when I see pedestrians waiting I try to afford them the opportunity, if the road is busy, when everyone is rushing to wherever.

It's some time since I've been there but the Germans had the right idea. You know what they are like for following the rules, pedestrians are required to use a designated crossing properly i.e only when instructed to cross and are subject to fines for Jaywalking if they don't. In fact in the exact opposite of our new rules or at least the way they have been interpreted, pedestrians are required to yield to faster modes of transport. When everybody knows what they are supposed to do it's arguably a safer approach than the uncertainty that our new rules have created

Many drivers appear to have little comprehension that driving safely requires a high level of anticipation.
