C250TD Automatic
Hi guys, I am new to this, from South Africa.

I have a 1998 C250TD automatic, about 260000km on the clock. Since I have had it, there seems to be a lag when you try to accellerate, a bit of a hesitation before suddenly roaring into life with all the power in the world, then a lag when it changes again. Is this normal? I have driven a BMW 320d and it springs into life as soon as you touch the pedal!

The other question is, does anyone know the vacuum or pressure specs for the turbo wastegate/pressure controller? I fitted a new turbo but there seems to be too much pressure! The blower pipe onto the intake has blown off twice!

You need some new clips, they wear with time and no longer hold as well as they should. Once they've been blown off once, they never hold properly again, and will continue to do son. Cheap, and easy to fix.

Boost should top out at about 15 Psi or 1 Bar. There was an issue with the intercooler connections not having any raised flanges, so the pipes blew off. You would have to rig your own fix for this unless you change to a later intercooler.

The MB and Beemer will feel different on initial accelleration as the Mb uses an indirect engine and the BMW a direct one. Direct produces more torque low down and more instantly.

I think turbo lag is par for the course with a C250td if mine is anything to go by. I coud be wrong of course, but I think it's the nature of the beast for the very reasons stated above.

The C250 generally has a lag. When pulling away in W mode on the gearbox, you have to wait 2-3 secs before the turbo pulls away and in S mode it isn;t as bad but you do suffer from lag after gearchanges.

With regards to your turbo pipe, i don't think anything is wrong. Clean the pipe with brake cleaner or something similar and clean the other connecting end. I bought a heavy duty jubilee clip for mine as mine came off at the same place a number of times! Otherwise try replacing the pipe.

KLP 92, did the superchip you had help eliminate the lag? Just curious.

The real fix would be to upgrade the turbo to a variable vane type. This would spool up faster as it does on modern diesels.

oh how much do they cost i am seriously thinking about chipping mine, but dnt know if its feasible as fuel economy (reason i buted c250 td) will rise :(

Thanks guys. This helps. I have bought a new pipe, cost around R340 SA Rands, quite a rip-off for the size of it! If this blows off, I will fit a high pressure bulldozer pipe and clamps!

Its made the lag considerably less but its still there. With the chip there is alot more power, at pick up and especially during the midrange, but you still get that lag sometimes when it changes gear.

Before the chip i never drove in W mode because from standstill it took too long for the power to cut in, making pulling away from junctions impossible unless it kicked down to 1st gear. Since the chip i hardly use S mode, its in W!

KLP 92, whats the price of the chip and any reccomendations? i always wiry of these simply as i never heard of a sucess story and i ASSUME the fuel consumption increases? (more diesel to get that more acceleration?)

I used Superchips. I was recommend by Jimmy who had used them previously.

I'm very happy with the performance now, its noticably quicker. After initally having it chipped i noticed a slight decrease in consumption. Approx 2 mpg, but this was due to me driving it harder as i was taking advantage of the power! A month later after the novelty wears off and you drive normally again i have noticed an increase in mpg.

Overall i would say fuel consumption is increased if driving normally, decreased slightly when gunning it, but the drive has improved 100%!! Since having it chipped its no longer a battered work horse! Had it repainted and treated it to a leather interior!

i have to research this... any websites etc i can do some research on a good chip?
