A trip in a BMW 645Ci

I had the bmw 4.4 in the x5 when it first came out, and the 2.8 i6 in the first gen z3. beautiful engines.
but with the advance of diesel technology i really cant see myself in another petrol, unless its something REALLY special

Hi, sorry to butt in guys. I own both a V6 3series and a V8 W211, both petrol.

My BM runs smoother and quiter than than the MB, noticebly at idle. I'll get it checked out for a misfire / engine mounts, but my local indie previously said it sounded normal to him, and its not long had a service at MB who reported nothing wrong. It's a shame I dont know anyone with a similar-engined MB to use as a guide - I dont particulary want to waste time looking for a problem that exists only in my head! Would have expected a higher level of refinement though.

My 211 500 is very smooth and virtually silent at idle. Then turbine smooth all the way to the red line. The only time you can really hear it is in the upper rev range. Otherwise it's very unobtrusive.

The BM 6 cyl petrol is surely one of the smoothest engines ever (and is my list of must-have's). It may have an edge on the Mer V8 but I wouldn't expect there to be much in it - esp at idle.

Cheers LondonScottish. Mines the W211K, and I sometimes wish it made a little more noise through the rev range, ha ha. I'll get it checked out but sounds fine above about 900rpm. Its almost as if there's a bit of 'slack' for want of a better word.

You're spot on about the BM 6cyl, of course (straight 6, not V, sorry, my typo). Maybe I'm comparing the two unfairly. We'll see.

Driving my E500 W211 5.5 V8 is a wonderful event however short the journey. Reminder, I must post pics up!

I picked up a BMW 645ci convertible on the weekend, it was either that or a clk convertible v8 but the guy selling it couldn't tell if it has isofix and the car was too far away for me to waste a journey if it didn't. I'm pretty sure the connection points would be there if he looked. The car had to be v8, convertible 4 seats and old. I've heard numerous reliability horror stories about the BMW so there was a lot of risk involved. It had just under 67k miles on the clock. Overall it is the runt of the 6 series litter as there is a superior 650ci with bigger engine and 10% more HP and torque. In any case the BMW has a decent cabin , decent 350l boot and makes for a very nice GT . It isn't all that sporty, it's heavy , large but at least it's comfortable. I'll find out what sort of state it's in when I get it serviced shortly. It drives nicely and the transmission is very nice and smooth, it has a nice v8 soundtrack too , its ticking many boxes for its bargain basement price

As expected given this is a bmw, it is a garage queen. To clarify, not my garage but the repair shop. I'd never seen a car that drinks more coolant than petrol even though it is a 4.4l v8. Turns out that it had not one, but two coolant leaks 🤣 1100 quid later, the leak is fixed and the dealer i bought it from are considering how much money to give me for my trouble because I could have returned it and made it their problem.

We are not out of the woods yet. The tyres are so bad that if you put your foot down from a stop, the car pulls in the wrong direction, so that's next on the to do list , I'm looking out for the next Michelin 15% off sale at blackcircles, following which she will either wear 4x MPS4s or 4x MPs5 for gbp700 all round. The drivers seat doesn't lift and the front brake rotors are warped. Finally it needs new wipers to wipe its owners tears 😢 off his cheeks. I've got it booked for a reversing camera, android auto and dashcam install for another 650 quid. I always suspected bmW was short for Broke Miserable W@nker

Buy a Bentley with a 6.75 liter turbo engine. All the smoothness of a petrol engine with the torque characteristics of of a turbo diesel, including a 4500RPM red line.
Hahaha I'm sold on the red line 🤣
To be fair I don't think I've taken the engine above 4k revs since I bought it so might as well have bought a diesel haha
