A238 E Class Convertible Roof strings worn and snapped

Theres a Coachtrimmer, C E Moore of Disraeli Road NW10, I delivered a fairly new (just out of warranty) C or E class convertible, with broken strings, MB were talking thousands and were not interested in goodwill. I am not sure how much the job cost but they may be worth a call?
Just picked mine up from the local dealer after servicing to be told the cord had snapped - seemed fine last night when the roof went up, but hey-ho.
Dealer obviously knows about this as they went straight into the "not a recall, so not our problem" mode, so my response, tech bulletin number, and references to various acts have been noted.
They weren't very happy as I was complaining on the phone to MB in the dealership whilst their sales event was on...
It's mad that they have recognised the problem, issued a doc, but won't hold their hand up to the issue. Five day clock on the official complaints procedure has started. Ombudsman and legal will follow.
Service advisor was not keen to talk to me after - just left my keys and paperwork on the desk I was using with a note that my car was outside...

I’ve read this thread about your claims via the ombudsman.
I am right now experiencing this tension cord problem. My car is E220D 2018 cabriolet.
I am right now on the fence if I should take it to an independent garage to fix or go to my local Mercedes dealer that I bought the car from with your documents in tow.
My dilemma is, if the ombudsman does not support my claim, then I will be £2-3k out of pocket.
The independent garage has quoted me between £800-£1k.
I guess my question to you is, do you reckon I could win the battle with Mercedes?

I would advise you to just go and see Tony in Coventry yo repair. I have just had mine done the string had frayed to I had snapped he done mine using parashoot string which is very strong and he charged me £400. He will take you into Coventry shopping centre while he dies it then pick you up. Had the same response from Mercedes then they wanted me to book in so they can do a report on it even though they told me what the problem was and charge me £298 plus vat. So from looking in here someone else had been to his workshop soft tops repair and was really happy with his service so I went from London to him as well and so please with his service and my roof is perfect now. So from £4000 to £400 no brained. But it all depends weither yours us the same as mine but still will be so much cheaper.
I just think with all the warranty they say you must have and if not they take no responsibility so hopefully this help uf you need number let me know

The independent merc specialists is charging me more than Tony in Coventry, but unfortunately it is a bit of a trek from Norfolk.

I thought I had got away with it. I generally drive to work with the top down, then get out and put the roof up using the key remote. I then check the condition of the roof strings as it goes back up. Until now, it always looked fine.
I now see that the near side string is frayed and the offside is just starting to fray. This is a 2018 E350d with 32k miles. I bought it less than a year ago at 22k. It does have a warranty, so I’ll see what the warranty provider says. But I’ll probably just run it over to Coventry if that is the best course of action.

Hi , unfortunately I feel that the Mercedes Benz brand is in decline from my experience and others on this forum.
Great shame as I really enjoy my example.
No doubt another round of bollocking from the establishment.
I can remember when a local kia dealer told me within 10 years they would be challenging the likes of BMW , I have driven the stinger that KIA produce , the finish could be better , not a great sales success but it's a good car.

The Kia Stinger is an eight year old model, and so irrelevant to any debate about current models. The EV6 mind you, that is something different.
Back on topic, as I posted originally Tony in Coventry did a permanent fix to my cabriolet roof issues, at a fair price and without the £000s bull we’ve all had from Merc Dealers.
A visit to Coventry has solved this issue for a number of members now @CabrioChap so very much worth going down that road, esp as your warranty may cover Tony’s costs whereas there cannot be any chance of them paying the Dealer price. Good luck, let us know how you get on?

Update:
My roof has now been fixed by my local merc specialist. He doesn’t normally do roof repairs, but has done an excellent job with mine. When I brought mine in, there was the same model to my car on the drive, that just got fixed with the same problem. It definitely is a common theme and it really should be a recall, due to the bad design.
Paid £680 for it, rather than £3-4k at the merc dealer. Although a bit more than Tony in Coventry, but still a fifth cheaper than dealers.
When my service plan is finished with the dealer, I’m taking mine to this garage instead!
I have just spotted this problem with my 2018 C 63 bought 2021 from main dealer.Roof works OK but could go any time.Thanks to all those that contributed to the Forum and I think it was Tony that posted the MB memo with recommendations plus the Ombudsman findings.My car had 2 years warranty expiring February 2023 so I bought the repair kit with a view to getting someone to replace some of the cables.
Having now read the Ombudsman report which determined this was a known defect at the time of sale (an inherent defect) I am inclined to take it up with the dealership.The trouble is they will wriggle and charge £200 to diagnose the problem.They shouldn’t get away with it.From the threads here two people have been successful in claiming 100%.

I have the same roof cables issue on my 2018 C63, 21,000 miles.It’s going into Mercedes (Sytners) for an assessment , cost if MB don’t pay £175 for first hour just to look at it.I will be armed with Tonys documents , I expect a battle.Will let you know what happens but thanks to those that posted on this.You’re more than welcome Daniel, I am pleased you found my post useful and helped you get the fix repaired. l bought the repair kit £45 but once you start messing with roof the dealer won’t touch it.It looks a fiddle to replace all the cords but the issue is will replacing the worn ones fix it long term.Would be cheap fix if you are brave enough, as per YouTube video by Grant J in USA.

I’m just back from a trip to Coventry, Tony replaced 4 of my worn cords and was very knowledgeable and helpful. He gave me a tour of the tools he uses and talked me through the various cars that are in the process of being fixed.
Glad it’s all sorted now, but will continue to keep an eye on them. Just for my peace of mind.
