A238 E Class Convertible Roof strings worn and snapped

Hi All, thanks firstly for all the info, I have a w205 with the exact issue relating to the roof chords, just had diagnostic completed and a quote from MB for £10,300 to replace the roof unit completely.

Thank you. I think I might go to an independent merc specialist near me. Merc dealer wants me to pay for diagnostics just to have a look, although we already know the problem.
The independent merc specialists is charging me more than Tony in Coventry, but unfortunately it is a bit of a trek from Norfolk.
Hi interesting reading thank you. Is it possible for you to give me Tony’s number in Coventry please? Thanks Sam

Hi my 2018 E Class convertible roof would not open fully, when I have investigated it the strings (for a better word) have frayed and one side has snapped. I eventually got the roof to close properly and contacted my Mercedes branch to get them to take a look at it.

In the meantime i did some digging and found a technical bulletin issued by Daimler in 2019 stating cars produced between 2016 & 2019 may get this fault due to possible high tensile stress on the cords during the soft top sequence.

I passed all this info onto the Mercedes branch and they said they would pass this onto Mercedes as its out of warranty for a good will gesture. Got a reply yesterday from Mercedes who basically refused to do anything and the cost is £2000 to repair the dealer has been great but I'm not happy with Mercedes.

Anybody else had this issue? either way i would advise you check the strings regularly and if you see any signs to fraying get it booked in if its still under warranty.

Technical bulletin att

Thank you for the advice, had the same issue, the roof wouldnt lock open due to the last cord snapping stopping the roof liner tucking the flaps in. Contacted Mercedes and of course was not covered under there extended warranty and they wanted £2000 to replace the cords. I bought the repair kit from Mercedes £46.00 and a rivet gun from Amazon complete with the drill bits to drilled the old rivets out on the 2 damaged cordes.
Worked a treat, only needed to replace the lowest 2 cords (green ones) and problem solved.
All the other cords seem in decent condition as far as I can see the lowest 2 cords are the only ones that are under tention when the roof is both opened and closed.

Do you know if this issue is covered by MB extended warranty?
No, it isnt, I tried to claim. I had this issue and the MB warranty books clearly states cords on the convertibe roof arnt covered.
Buy a repair kit from MB for around £46.00
