A35

Essential?... says the Merc salesman. I prefer to think of them as "wants" rather than "needs" and neither applies.

Don't forget my car will be at least 50kg lighter than the others which should give me at least 0.03 seconds 0-60 advantage. Essential!

Well I’ve bought one and know what I think is essential for me. Personally I think you’d get your money back on an exec pack

Laugh. You mean the dealer will charge more when reselling it. Anyway, this is a lease so it's immaterial.

Agreed. I’m not leasing mine, so resale is of a concern. In my experience with used AMG’s, completely standard cars don’t hold their money.

All the options I have ticked are things I want, so I’m happy with my choice anyway

Me too, currently running a 310 bhp Golf R so it should be a true comparison when it comes to power output. Will be interesting to see if you notice the drop in power from your A45 :)

Presently driving a 66 plate R which is due for return in October - Have to select changeover May latest.

Most recent and previous car history is A3 S Sline Quattro (2)

£40k is the circa maximum ceiling and little below that preferred.

Have always done diligence at this time and looked over the fence at all the cars in my price band and BMW leave me cold and really disliked the previous Mercedes A series externally and the interior and so its always been between Audi and VW with that little bit of Audi quality winning out. The R changed that, just too good a value and felt like the better car to drive over the S3 and over two years on definitely the best car personally driven. First car not had to compromise performance for comfort and practicality and vice versa.

Have regular passengers and for all round usage its hard to beat the R as a package as with the DSG day to day driving is effortless, and you can at flick of a button when road and mood dictates enjoy some spirited driving.

The Quattro Sline were quite hard rides, so now had Chassis Control Suspension with the near cossetted ride in comfort on the R (19" Pretoria) ride is definitely a consideration near top of the requirements list.

Was not even considering another model, it was going to be a MK 7.5 R.

But not here to eulogise about the R and just annoy Mercedes owner, there is a reason, and its that with the WLTP delays its likely that an R might not even be selectable come changeover and I need a plan B and this is where the A35 has popped its head over the parapet!

Sat in a A220 at the weekend and even in that guise (AMG Line) must say its a far nicer looking car than its predecessor and interior is a much nicer experience (gone is the I Pad screen for one!) It felt quite luxurious and less cramped and seats were really good. Predecessor felt cramped and uninspiring and whatever the design tweak are it was just an environment that immediately felt good in and that 'feeling' is really the barometer we all work to.

The A 45 was not something ever looked at as obviously out of my price band but the A 35 is aimed at me and its grabbed my attention.

Having read a little through this forum I can see many a comment about not being a true AMG and I really get that if you are invested in the brand and really understand its DNA but will say that for me, coming from the outside, the fact that its designed by AMG (and not an AMG Line) and has performance that matches my R which is all that seeking, then none of that matters for a second and I would be happy that there is an entry point available to me.

Personally like the styling of this A 35 AMG and though have seen the nit picks of subjectivity that exist on all forums it has passed that test.

Problems have is the Mercedes Packs which is new to me as used to more granular options, as I would like the 19" wheels but not bothered about the rest of the Aerodynamic Pack.

But think I can work with the packs and maybe live with some standard, its not a major concern - The car did spec on the configuration came in at £39k with the style pack (which 50-50 over dropping at £2300 saving)

My main concern and one of reasons signed up here was the ride as all ever read about AMG is the ride on UK roads and given the R has the excellent DCC the bar of expectation has been set high (it adjust the ride even in sport setting and so ride is never ruined)

The adaptive dampers would be #1 selection on the A 35 but just because you have them does not mean they will do the job want so hoping for more user experiences from moment the A 35 AMG start to come on UK roads.

I am not expecting a replicated R experience, the ride, throttle response, handling may all have their own feel and thats fine as you always adjust to the point they become natural

Imagine this is a dream post for that someone who proposed the A 35 AMG as its confirmation that its attracted someone that has never looked at Mercedes as their offering did not match the pool I was swimming in (R, S3, RS, Type R) given the A 45 was more an RS 3 competitor.

I’m (currently) in a Mk7.5 3Door R , having come from a W204 C63 so not comparing apples with apples. The R is a great car , good at everything, got 42 mpg yesterday on a 550 mile motorway trip, and is quick when you want it to be. What it’s lacking for me is soul and charisma. The interior let’s is down badly compared to an Audi , and worse still compared to a Merc. I’ve sat in a few New AMG Line A Class cars and they just feel so much nicer and upmarket than the R. I’m not sure what the MK8 R will be like (unlikely to be out before you need to change. The A35 demo cars should be hitting the showrooms in March , I’d book recommendations booking a test drive ASAP if you are interested dealers have plenty of requests already logged. Good luck and hope find something you enjoy :)

The R interior on the MK 7.5 is improved from my MK 7 but definitely falls short of the Audi in lustre. 2 Previous cars were Audi SLine Quattro and the present second car is an A1 Black Edition 185 HP so can compare quite well. However, having tested the S3 and the better at time standard options on the R felt the R was the better car.

Understand what you are saying on charisma but If performance and charisma were my main consideration then maybe would have gone for something a little more raw but likely compromised, but when balance the workhorse do it all the car it has to be for its duties, then its an amazing car as its still has some pretty serious performance on tap given how well it does its other tasks.

From what seen of the A35 it will seem to keep that balance for me and maybe add a little more lustre and feel.

Imagine the MK 8 will be a technology fest of touch and gesture and its not filling me with great anticipation. The A35 is obviously high on tech too, but there is quite a bit of tactile contact to be had too from sitting in the AMG Line this weekend. But, forget the analysing of differences, my main go to decider is how something makes me feel and must say even that AMG Line made me feel really good, the seats for starters, but the steering wheel and though thought would dislike the screen found that it was incorporated much better than felt it would be and when you add in the chrome, the funky rotor air vents and its definitely turned my head.

From what reviews seen so far, the ride is not to be compared to the outgoing model and that with the dampers its will be perfectly ok for UK roads.

My heads turned and will be seriously looking at this come the time and quite excited at prospect of moving into a Mercedes as never really considered the previous A1 as that never felt overly worthy of the badge when I looked at rest of the range, think this A35 maybe changes that.

The Merc is just a much nicer place to be in than the R. We also have an A3 SLine and it just feels a much nicer interior. The quality of everything in the R is great but it just feel so “plain”, could go so far as to say boring , definitely not exciting. The old A45 felt very special, I’m sure the new A35/45 will feel the same. The AMG sports seats are light years in front of what VW offer on the R, the GTI gets better trim!

Got my A35 on order. Never driven a DCT before so this is going to be new to me and in some strange way I'm kinda nervous about it.

Car not arriving till Aug/Sept I'm told :(

If you’ve driven an automatic you will be at home. If you haven’t don’t worry about it , just enjoy it, after you’ve had it a while I doubt you will want to go back to a manual. :D

Thanks for the reply Andy.

I'm such a ***** about these things, think I'll go to my dealer and ask to take out any DCT car just to answer a few questions I have in my head and get a 'feel' for it.

What spec have you gone for?
I’ve been told March delivery for mine, never driven DCT before either, will be good fun to try something different.

I would like to buy an Austin or Morris van or pick-up - A30/A35/A40 from the 1950's era.
Being a project; pretty much any condition would be of potential interest, other than any saloon.

I'm just plain Jane standard A35 in white.

If It was my own car (I'm personal leasing) I may have added the style pack, bigger screen, upgraded sound system, but of course its not.

I do feel however the standard A35 has a truck load of standard 'toys' in there already, I'm more than happy with it.

What did you go for ? I'm envious of your March delivery.

Go for it , I haven’t owned a manual since VW brought out the Direct Shift Gearbox DSG , which is a double clutch transmission, and would never go back to a manual (ducking as bricks are likely to be incoming). Please post your thoughts once you have had a drive :)

Ye standard spec is more than enough in reality, I just couldn’t resist the big screens and 64 colours of ambient lighting haha.
So I ended up going for the premium pack, style pack and adaptive dampers, in yellow.
When did you order yours?

Yours is going to be proper kitted out. I love the yellow, really really suits this car. You'll need to post up some pics when you get it. I just had a hard job persuading the misses so went with white in the end, but I do love white as much as its boring.

I ordered the car only on the 4th Feb. I think the order went through to MB on the 5th Feb. To this day I still don't have a delivery date (I don't know how long it takes), I've only a rough date of Aug/Sept.

Haha similar situation to me, I almost changed the colour to white as I couldn’t decide on the yellow, but like you say it seems to suit the car so fingers crossed I like it when I see it in the flesh!

I’ve got a rough delivery date of 8th March and I ordered early December. Hopefully yours comes a little sooner!

Do MB have anything in place where you can 'track your order' ? I know when I was waiting on my Golf GTI I could track it all the way and know what stage it was at.

Oh, and we'll need to setup an owners thread soon :)

The dealer that put the order through should be able to check its status. Some dealers are better than others at keeping you informed if you ask them to check. The status for my C63s was very well communicated. The GLA45 from a different dealership wasnt great and i found out the day before i was meant to pick the car up (after checking various times for them to reconfirm the collection date, which they confirmed), that the car was still stuck on the assembly line. i have a feeling they didnt bother checking/confirming.

In the US, the VIN code allows you to check status direcly i believe, we dont seem to have that level of transparency on this side of the pond.

Like MrRight said we can only do it via the dealer. I think German customers can track their vehicle order via the Mercedes me app and like you I could track my Golf R and found it useful so it’s strange that MB don’t offer anything.

And yes we will :)
