Now I haven't done this, but am I correct in thinking that if I accidently took my automatic out of gear on a motorway, the only way to get it back into Drive (D) would be to stop the car... on a motorway???
ie once the car is out of D you can only put it back in while stationary.

Is this correct? It somehow scares me that I could that easily put myself into a position where i was in a car travelling at 70 with no power and having to stop!

you don't have to be stationary or have your foot on the brakes to go from Neutral to Drive

Correct.

In my W203 (auto) I asked my ex g/f to change to "3" meaning the radio station memory button on head unit - However, she had other ideas  and instead knocked the gear out of "D" to "N" and I simply placed the gear back into D without braking and all is fine.

Have a look here though?.

Sorry, its an invalid file but it was an extract form the interactive owners manual if it had worked and it says no way?

Portzy.

Good job you didn't ask her to turn on the RDS

Hi,

I once shoved an auto (Morris Oxford ;) ) into reverse @ 30 mph.
Acted as a very good brake i.e. back wheels locked (luckily no-one behind but it would have been their fault, 'guv'.;) ).
Stopped.
Shoved it back into D.
No probs.

Probably lucky but autos can take some 'stick' .

Cheers,

I have - today! :o

While conducting some testing to investigate my engine problem, I was doing ~70 m.p.h. @ 6000 r.p.m. (the red line) and full throttle in 3rd. Went to shift to D, missed, and put it into N instead! Immediate excursion into the red , spent a moment wondering what on earth had happened, uttered an oath, foot off the gas, put it back in D, uttered some more oaths, put some gas back on. The gearbox seemed mildly confused because it took it a few seconds to get into 4th.
