Have now fitted my new hard disk and am half way through reinstalling software.

My preferred browser is Firefox so that has been downloaded and told during installation process (I thought) that it is to be default browser.

In addition to personal e-mail account (hotmail) I have a paid for web-mail account from 1and1.
I have now downloaded their login software.

Previously (on old hard disk) when I double clicked their desktop icon it either fired up Firefox or if Firefox was already running, opened a new tab in Firefox.

Now, however, when I double click their icon it opens Internet Explorer, whether Firefox is running or not.

Any ideas how to make it open in Firefox?

Another minor problem - again with Firefox - it is not remembering passwords.
I've been into tools-options-security and the remember passwords box is ticked
Again, any ideas?

Sorted that one!

Do you know what type of file the desktop icon is - i.e. is it a shortcut or is it an actual file?

If it is a shortcut, when you look at the properties of the icon (right click it - and select properties) what does it say in the target?

re: the password problem:
Click on the tools tab at the top of firefox
Then click on options
Then the privacy Tab
Make sure that the clear history when firefox closes box is not checked.
If it is then uncheck it.
Now try it and see if it will save it properly.

It is a shortcut
target is
"I:\Program Files\1&1\1&1 EasyLogin\EasyLogin.exe" /webmailer
this is the sam as on my laptop which starts Firefox:dk:

On the password problem, I thought I had solved it with some changes in the privacy options, but it has changed back again.
I think I will check the laptop settings & change to the same.

Strange question about easyLogin... but did you check with 1&1 they're normally very helpful....also get the latest version...3.5.0.69

Start menu - all programs - Set program access & defaults (top of list)
